Tetanus vaccination not available in country (go figure)

While the law doesn't require K1 applicants to have their vaccinations in order to receive the visa, a Consulate is certainly allowed to require them. It is my general advice that where practical, K1 applicant's go ahead and get all their vaccinations prior to or during the medical exam, whether required or not. It saves the trouble of dealing with a Civil Surgeon in the USA, many of which won't sign the vaccination supplement without doing the medical again.

For some reason, the tetanus vaccination is not available in the city of Tbilisi! wacko.gif The embassy is informed and we have been told that it will not be a problem for the interview. We know my fiance will need to get the vaccination for his AOS. Given the situation, what is the probability that the US civil surgeon will insist on doing another physical rather than just giving him the shot and transferring the other vaccination records?

Given the anecdotal evidence provided on this site, the odds are that the civil surgeon is going to try to talk you into getting the complete medical regardless of whether vaccinations are required. Let's face it, who wouldn't want to be paid upwards of $150 just for poking and prodding someone for 5 minutes, giving a tuberculin skin test, and drawing some blood?

You can call around to various civil surgeons in your area until you find one that agrees to only give the needed vaccinations and complete the I-693. You can expect to be grossly overcharged for this relatively simple service, since it takes nearly as long as doing a full physical, and probably more time than they spend with their regular patients.

Thanks Jim! Unfortunately, this is what I expected. He may not leave the country until a month after the visa is issued, would there possibly be an option to have a new (I forget the number) form filled out by the Civil Surgeon in country? Or since the visa has been issued, it is a fruitless effort?

In the U.S., you can get the vaccinations anywhere -- such as your county Health Department. My pre-wife needed two of them. We were asked suspiciously, "Is this for immigration purposes?" I said, "Eventually, it will be part of that, but we need them more immediately for health reasons..." Almost before I'd finished, the pre-wife was ushered in to be, uh, shot. The administrative clerk even logged & stamped the vaccination record from Ecuador so that all vaccinations were listed in one place. The cost per shot was either $10 or $20 (memory fails me, si man).

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Just get all missing vaccinations in the US, prior to the AOS. Red Cross, county health, whatever. They're reasonably priced, and you won't get pressured into redoing the whole physical because a vaccination was missing.

It's not the vaccination you'll be grossly overcharged for, but the service of transcribing the vaccinations to the I-693. Unless the DS-3025 is marked "Complete" for vaccinations, he'll need to get the vaccinations transcribed. Only an approved panel physician abroad or an approved civil surgeon in the US can certify that the required vaccinations have been completed. Neither a panel physician nor a civil surgeon is required to actually administer the vaccinations. If you have proof they will accept that the vaccinations have been completed, then they will certify that they are complete.

The panel physician will not modify the DS-3025 that was completed before the interview. I don't know if they will issue a new one. If they did, and you sent only the DS-3025 with the AOS petition, don't be surprised if you get an RFE for an I-693 completed by a civil surgeon, since the new DS-3025 might not jive with the information contained in the medical report USCIS receives from the consulate.

If you want to be 90% sure you won't get an RFE, then get the vaccination wherever you want, but get a civil surgeon in the US to transcribe the vaccination info to an I-693. I say 90% sure because medical reports have been known to go missing somewhere between the consulate and USCIS, and this happens with surprising regularity. Even if you get a civil surgeon to transcribe the vaccine info to an I-693, there's still a chance USCIS will say they don't have a medical report, and issue an RFE for a complete medical.

Thanks to everyone! I appreciate the information. He managed to get a copy of the DS-3025 and everything else from the doc in Tbilisi. We will get the tetanus from my (soon to be his doc or the county) and then have the civil surgeon transcribe the whole lot on to the I693.

Thanks again for the info.
