Marriage Certificate for AOS

Hi everyone:)

I have a question about the marriage certificate that i have to send with my AOS package is it have to be an original or photocopy ?

When me get married the judge in the chapel gave us something called 'customer's copy' can i use this or i have to wait for the original marriage certificate that they will sand by the post? They said that it can take from 4-6 weeks. I guess that it take time for them to register it.

You need to wait for the one that shows the marriage has been "registered". You can then submit a regular photocopy of that document

Do we need to register it or they register it from the clerk's office... we gat married in something like a city hall. (the same place we picked up the marriage license from). What i have to do with this document after we receive it ?

That is why it takes 4-6 weeks... they are in the process of recording it and then giving you the "official" document. When it arrives in the mail you need to put it away for safekeeping (after making a photocopy of it for AOS)

Hi Lowe.. I read your post.. I am just concern of your Q.. Ok here it is. I would rather suggest you to wait the Original Marriage Cert. be sure it is registered at your Civil local registrar/County office because the USCIS will double check that kind of document as a proof that you are certified married. Just have a scan/photo copy of that Marraige certificate. But on your interview day please bring the original with you and your spouse and proofs of documents they ask you ok? I'm done on this..I just want to share with you how it went great! I did not send originals documents because it migh happen if there are cases they are going to transfer the case it might be lost or whatever..well atleast if this migh happen you all have your documents but bring it all on you interview day! Do i need a SSN for something... before i get my work permit ? What i can use it for?

SSN is used for banking and as a Tax ID in addition to being needed for working

Hi again.. Don't worry for the SSN if you are not ready to work yet.. But it would be good if you will get your SSN before you are going to fil the EAD for employment. On my case, I don't have SSN but still fine when I file EAD..they sent me the card for that..but I am not yet working because I need to fix all my AOS..On my interview last monday for AOS, they bother me about my SSN infact the officer suggested me to wait to file/get SSN once I will get the green card 30 days from now because it would be in ONE I mean it would be easy I think.. They took my EAD because my green card will soon arrive.. Good luck once again!

So i don't need my SSN right now...I mean i can get it after i receive the Work permit.

So... when i receive the original marriage certificate I can be sure that the marriage is registrate. But we are married now right ? even if it's in process of registration...

The registration is a beaurucratic process that need to be done... you legal marriage date is the date the officiant signed to the license.

Well we will wait a lil but I'm glad that they will register it cuz all this waiting on the long lines and stuff So i can get my SSN later right ? I'll not need it b4 the Work permit...

if you do not have a SSN you will need a separate tax ID number in order to file a joint tax return with your spouse. You may wish to simply get a SSN if you are still eligible to apply

I still can go n apply for one even 2day...but it this can get me in troubles when my I-94 expire...

I still don't have the marriage certificate so i guess i have 2 apply with my maiden name plus my I-94 will expire soon...and I'm not sure if i can file the AOS before it expire all depends on when we will receive the marriage certificate .

If you still have 14 days left before expiration of your I-94 you are still eligible to apply for a SSN...if less than 14 days then SSA will not accept an application.

yeah but it will not be a problem if i have a SSN and i over stay a lil bit... because i really don't know when we will receive the marriage certificate so i can apply for my AOS. So u kno when ur in this position is not good to take the attention of the institutions. I really have no idea when the certificate will arrive I'm trying to get all other papers done before i get it so i can mail it imminently after it arrives. We can pay the fee trough the internet right or we can pay in the Local immigration office when we give them the AOS package .
