Borders Group to close 200 Waldenbooks stores, cut 1,500 jobs in January to shrink chain

NEW YORK (AP) — Borders Group Inc., the second-largest U.S. bookstore chain, said Thursday it would shutter more of its small-format Waldenbooks stores in January as it focuses on its more profitable superstores.

The company is closing 200 Waldenbooks and Borders Express stores and cutting 1,500 jobs in January to make the chain smaller and more profitable.

I prefer Amazon, Half.com, DealOz to search for books. Usually I'd get prices that are upto 90% less than the bookstores.

it's always sad when bookstores close. Small private retailers were pushed out of the market by competitors like B&N and Borders, now they are closing their smaller stores and concentrating on the megastores. Nothing wrong with lots of books but it would be nice to have a few smaller bookstores in the area than one Superstore.
