H1N1 Vaccination

I think people just need to respect anothers decision to get it or not. Being a parent is hard enough without others invoking fear that the decision they made is going to harm their child and family.

My children and I both got the seasonal vaccine and the H1n1. The kids have to wait 4 weeks before their second shot of H1n1 so odds are that they will probably be exposed to the virus by then. My mommy instinct (and everyone's parenting instincts are different) is that something is better than nothing. Proactive rather than reactive.

P.S.

My 3 year old son got the nasal spray for both seasonal and H1n1. There needs to be a 28 day wait between sprays due to them being live viruses. I got the nasal spray for the seasonal flu- very easy- and I don't like anything squirted up my nose - it's more like a mist you breathe in. I got a shot for the H1n1 yesterday. The injection site is pretty sore compared to other shots I have had but still bearable.

I would say that is a good way to go about it..... that is if people were basing their decisions on scientific data and logic. I'm not suggesting this is anyone on these boards by any means. I've been listening to far too much talk radio on the commute home from work each day. My commute overlaps two shows, one very conservative, and one very liberal. There is one particular host that has been going on and on about how this is a liberal government ploy to foster a belief that they are saving the people so that they can take even more rights and freedoms away from the public. Now, at first, I was laughing hysterically, thinking this was a joke that nobody really believed that. Well, then I heard about 20 calls from listeners. I can say at that moment, I was truly ashamed to be American. Then there was the liberal leaning show and their callers seemed to have the same belief, except substitute government plot to take over with "corporate" plot to take over. I know, talk radio is not a representation of the populace..... but it's still scary.

I tried to go get mine today because our town has started the clinics....walked in at just after 1 (the thing was suppose to be from 10-5) but was turned away because they already had their 2000 people of the day  have to go try again tomorrow!

Well, I decided yesterday that I wanted to discuss this vaccine with my son's doctor. Because my son had a diaphragmatic hernia and one lung is sized smaller than the other, I was concerned that he may be more susceptible to an infection. However, the doctor's office doesn't have the vaccine for children in his age range (and no office in my small town does) .... So, I agonized over this decision and, at present, I don't seem to have any choice in the matter. I am seeing his pediatrician in 2 weeks for his 18 month check and will again follow up then.

I spoke to my Dad and he strongly suggested my wife and I get the H1N1 vaccine. He said that flu has been primarily affecting people under 60 (which includes him as well). The most deaths he's seen in the hospital have been from those in their 20s, 30s and 40s. Not those with previous health issues, but normally healthy individuals.

My wife is resistant to even getting a normal flu shot, let alone the H1N1 vaccine. The chances are slim that she'd catch it, but there's always that chance. If younger people are dying, I'd really prefer her get the shot too.

The CDC is reporting almost all the cases in the hospital are people that are in high risk catagories, not the average person. So take that as you want.

Older people are more apt to be immune to it already because H1N1 has been here for at least the past 100 years if not a lot longer, older people have gotten it already in their lifetimes most likely and are immune...

My son had his vaccine today. I know some doctors are against the mist, but my son has no health concerns at the moment and I believe he will be fine.

It's hard to get a clear picture when there are so many opinions, that is why it's best to research both sides, and form your own opinion and follow your heart.

I am an asthmatic and I have other health issues that place me in a high risk category, I will be getting it too.

Me as well. The most of the cases that have resulted in severe complications are people who have some sort of reseperatory issues, even if they are mild, and with my chronic pnuemonia I didn't want to chance it. The shot was fairly painless, I just don't recommend sleeping on the arm you got shot in like I did, cuz now it feels like it wieghs a million pounds. Definately everyone needs to research for themselves though and find out if they think it is a good idea in their personal cases.

By the time it starts showing up in your circle of friends it probably is going to be too late to get the vaccine and it become effective in time to protect you.

But that's up to you - I have respect for what ever you decide.

I really don't get the whole "conspiracy/scare" stuff that's going on about the H1N1 vaccine or even the regular flu shot. If it weren't for vaccinations, conditions like polio and smallpox would still be a real threat.

This is some info for anyone that has egg allergies (see attachment) and is considering getting the shot. My two year old son is allergic to eggs, so we are digging into this issue right now. The allergy specialist that diagnosed him would not give us a proffessional opinion on whether he should get it or not, so we have to go to another doctor to try and find out if we should or shouldn't. This article from the canadian allergy society makes alot of sense, so hopefully we'll have an answer within the week. By the way, I'm in phoenix and my wife is just outside vancouver BC, and it sounds like the canadian media is making alot bigger deal out of this than the american....she stopped watching the news cause it was making her paranoid.
