Is anyone familier with the interview process at US Consulate General, Guangzhou China. My wife has diffculty speaking and understanding english and I am wondering how that will impact the interview. We have not been notified of a date yet, but my experience dealing with this Consulate is marginal at best. I have been there three times and have never spoken to an American. It appears all the workers are Chinese :help:

At the beginning of the interview, your wife can ask that it be conducted in Chinese and the VO should comply. If She does do this my recommendation would be to have her first speak some pleasantries/introduction in English and then for her to let the VO know that she would like prefer to have the interview conducted in Chinese so that she does not misunderstand anything. This is no big deal and happens all the time. Just be sure to provide your wife with ample evidence that shows that you two can indeed communicate effectively with one another - emails, chat records etc.

Another thing that I would recommend is to go to the interview with your wife - you will not actually get to attend the interview with her but she can take your passport into the interview with her and show it to the VO which will give you points of having a bona fide relationship so to speak. And if you do go to the interview also attend an ACH (American Citizens Hour) session where you will get to speak with an American VO and you can let them know that your wife would prefer to have her interview conducted in Chinese and it will be noted in the computer for the VO who actually conducts the interview to see.

You've got some good answers already. For more China specific report and interview preparation, I recommend you also join at http://www.candleforlove.com

Your wife's English skill is likely to be a factor primarily with regard to how the two of you communicate. The interview can be in Mandarin, Cantonese, English or a combination as needed.

Hi, I've been looking into same with my Fiance (Shanghai).

(getting ready for her interview there in about 1+ month)

Here are a couple items that will eductate, inform, and prepare.

The Guangzhou Consulate has some problems that I hope are being worked on.

Knowledge is power ... but, a calm approach, studied preparation, and dedication to the process will carry all of us through.

i hope you speak chinese, as a lack of common language is partial grounds for denial at GUZ, according to recent reports. if you do, and have attended some school to study spoken chinese, a notarized statement from the school you attended will be quite valuable.

Evidence of how you communicate and a ready answer for any question on the subject has usually proven sufficient in recent years. If you use software to translate, don't be afraid to say so. The Consular officers with any experience are familiar with many couples' methods of communication. If you CAN communicate, be prepared to demonstrate how. If you can't, learn quickly.

In my experience, communication issues are enlarged when the case has other issues of concern.
