My fiance and I flew into LAX on July 17th and her I-94 was attached to her passport. We got married on Aug. 11th. On Aug. 19th we went to the Social Security office to get her SS number so we could start the AOS process. We where told she is not in the system. I asked what that means? Then I was told she could not be verified and they needed to make a copy of her birth certificate and a supporting document. That was no problem because we brought everthing.

The Social Security employee said it would be 2 weeks before we hear anything at all.

Then she said at that 2 week mark, we will recieve a notice in the mail either stating the SSN number has been assigned, or that more documentation is needed. If we recieve something in the mail stating more documentation is needed then that office will send the copies they made of her BC and supporting docs. We where told if this happens it could be 6 weeks or more.

Is this normal operating procedure? What went wrong? Did the officer at her POE mess up?

yes, looks like part of the problem could've occurred at her POE because it usually takes only a couple of weeks (even less, according to SSA) for her info to come in the SSA system.

however, if they said you will get something in the mail in two weeks, then that's a positive thing (that's their standard reply for SSN processing.

probably a technical glitch happened when her papers were being processed. don't worry though, SSN issues are easy to resolve as long as it's the SSA that has problems and not you.

Yes that's totally standard. They recommend waiting 3 weeks or so before going to get a SSN to ensure that you are in the system. I wasn't in the system either and they verified everything for me told me to wait 4-6 weeks... well 8 days later my SSN came in the mail.

Hang tight, you'll get it soon!
