Joel,

I don't cook, but I do help out around the kitchen - at home in the USA. Back in her country my wife won't allow it because family and friends will want to know why she's not being a good wife taking proper care of her husband.

Try thinking of it this way when you're in Ukraine - you want to make your wife look good in front of her family, do what you have to do to accomplish that.

Yodrak

...

My question is this...how do I get back into the kitchen while saving face with everyone. I have a feeling that this will be less of an issue when she finally gets to the States and sees that it is common for men to cook for themselves and their families, but in the meantime...

while in the Ukraine, let her cook. While in the US, you cook. While in the US, her mother shouldn't be on your butt because things are different here!

Sujeet cooks Indian food very well, and cooked for himself while living alone in India, something that always bothered his mom because she wanted someone cooking for him. It's a cultural thing in India, but in the US we both cook. He enjoys it and does it on weekends mostly(he gets home too late from work during the week to cook, so of course I cook usually). I would never forbid him from the kitchen, his food is too yummy! :D But in India it would be odd if he cooked meals for me, although he wouldn't be afraid to do it anyway. Just his mom or sisters would maybe think it's not right.

Please send Sujeet to NorthEast Ohio for the weekend. At the moment I am missing curries more than I am missing my family.

I am still housebreaking (kitchen training) my husband. :P He had no idea how to cook anything if it did not come from the frozen section wrapped in cardboard. He is very eager to learn how to cook, and is a wonderful help in the kitchen chopping veggies, making salads and setting the table, my little prep cook. Love sharing the kitchen with him. Once you two are in the states, teach her how to cook you will find it enjoyable.

Yeah, I'd say while in Ukrain, stay out of the kitchen and take the heat off of your SO. When you get to the states, you can run your home & kitchen the way you two want to.

I wouldn't even do that. I know what you mean Joel, but if her mother were to visit, he should once again bow out of the kitchen, to keep her from catching flack from the MIL.

Have to keep the peace!
