Never drove in my country all my life so it was helluva lessons before I finally got my DL. Husband's friend taught me the basics and then after "we thought" I'm already a driver, hubby allowed me to drive around the neighborhood all by myself. Failed the actual driving test once... second time was a charm.

It really takes a lot of nerves and patience... I can say there were many instances where I almost wrecked our cars and almost "killed" my husband.

I have actually given up trying to teach Ruchie how to drive. The near misses and my life flashing in front of my eyes have taken its toll on me. I honestly don't have the patience nor the money to replace my truck. One day I will hire an instructor to do what I wasn't able to do.

We just went through this, too. Huusband just passed the driving test last week (after failing the first time for not having paid attention to the fact that the light was red!).

No paid for driving lessons for us. I was the main instructor (with some help from a friends and my dad who took him out a few times). We spent a lot of time doing short/easy trips until both of us gained some confidence in his abilities behind the wheel. He does very well with the mecanics of driving, but making him also "think ahead" or "figure it out on the way" is overload and asking for trouble. Keeping it easy and predictable was key.

Good luck!

My husband forced me to learn how to drive a manual. That was a fun 2 months in the dead of winter.

You have reminded him the steering wheel is on the left hand side over here right? If he is sitting in what he recalls to be the drviers seat and is then leaning over that could be the problem.

He is sitting in what is the passenger seat over there. So yeah - I know there is a lot he has to re-learn.

It can be hard to learn but remind your husband that 16 year-old kids in this country can drive even though they lack common sense sometimes and can drive like maniacs. Nerves are common, too as driving can be deadly serious but if he is properly trained in defensive driving, he can drive with confidence. Four years is a long time without driving here and my wife got her license within 6 months. She never thought she could do it and I was critical of everything she did wrong but now she remembers all my nagging even when I'm not in the car with her.

Good advice. Thinking ahead and seeing potential problems are key. Watch the speed and don't tailgate people so you've got enough time to react. Assume other drivers are idiots and watch out for their poor driving.

I started my wife in a parking a lot to get her used to how the car handles and we did until she was comfortable driving down streets with little traffic then on the more heavily traveled roads.
