Where will Canada send its preemies and other critical patients when we adopt their health care system?

You might see companies, individuals, ect, distancing themselves from a goverment run healthcare system. If the regulations are loose enough you will see portions of the population form their own healthcare system. The middle to upperclass including well to do businesses could possibly build and maintain their own healthcare facilities. They would hire the best doctors and have the most up to date facilities. They will find ways to keep the goverment out of it.

What happens if you have crappy insurance in the US, and you give birth to a premie who needs icu for X number of days, weeks, and the hospital bill is so exorbitant because of some insurance loophole that you can't pay for it all? What happens then?

If you can't pay for it, you can't pay for it. What are they going to do, sell your organs?

Excellent idea! There certainly is a huge market. And at the end of the day, it would be the unworthy extending the life of the worthy. So, the unworthy would serve a worthy purpose. It's brilliant.

Value add all the way around.

The solution to send patients to the US is far more economical than building and maintaining additional facilities and staff which may only be in use a small percentage of the time.

Good thing the 'wasteful' American system exists to absorb the occasional (and completely predictable) spikes in demand ;)

Indeed! It's a puzzle why those Europeans/Canadians don't turn around and adopt an American system straight away, except of course they have been brain washed by all that socialism. Idiots!

Amen! I wish all the democrats would realize that we actually do have one of the best health care systems in the world. I was a Canadian. Where it takes 3-6 months for an MRI, where it takes almost 6 weeks to visit a specialist. Where it takes at least 3 months for my aunt to receive a surgery to remove her cancer. It's pure brainwashing. Yes, it sounds so lovely and nice to say that everyone gets healthcare, and I know it pulls at the heart strings of a lot of people, but trust me, the US is so much superior. I do feel bad when I hear stories of people who can't afford healthcare or owe a lot of money. But people...our medical system is not a privilege, you have to pay for services rendered. Why don't people think that way. If I need a service, or medicine, I KNOW that I need to pay for it. I don't expect the government to pay everything for me. I just want them to keep this country safe and run it efficient so I can have a good life.

Good Lord - here we go again with the Canada scare stories or the nonsense assumption that people believe that health care will be available for free. Nobody talks about receiving services for nothing and nobody pretends that there is a perfect system out there.

That said, what people do realize is that overpaying the way we do in the US today - paying by far the most per capita and the most as a percentage of GDP on health care while leaving one out of six Americans by the roadside, while wasting roughly one out of every three to four dollars spent on health care on nothing but red tape, while having the highest rate of preventable deaths among major industrialized nations - surely cannot be considered a superior system.

You get what you pay for. We pay the most because we get the best.

If that was the case, I'd suspect that we'd have a better showing on preventable deaths and life expectancy. And we wouldn't lead the world in red tape either. Unless you think red tape is somehow productive and desirable.

You keep going on and on about life and death rates as if all lives were equally valuable. Unless those statistics are weighted according to the value of the human life, they are meaningless.

Then the hospital will sue you, ruin your credit, garnish any future wages you might get. This will prevent you from moving forward financially. I've seen it happen to people.

What is worse is when your child has cancer and your insurance won't pay because the treatment is too 'new.' Luckily, when this happened to a friend of mine, his daughter was at Children's in Seattle which, though a private hospital, will not turn any child away for failure to pay.

Well, if the quality indicator is how much a health care industry can rip off a nation, then the US system wins hands down. There's no other nation even close in the world.

Sometimes, when there is a forest fire, you let a section burn so you can save the part that really warrants it.

It's the same thing. You can spend a lot of extra money to feel good and save it all, but those extra resources are better spent on the part that is actually superior and of higher value.

Individuals who have demonstrated their worth to the free market are rewarded with compensation that allows them to participate in superior plans.

It works well for everyone, except those who have no or little value to add.

Thank goodness for the few & far between hospitals like this... (F)
