WOODBRIDGE — A $50 million contract was awarded today by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority for a piece of the ... turnpike widening project between exits 6 and 9.

The latest contract with South State Inc. of Bridgeton will build one mile of widened highway.

The high price tag is so that the authority remains in the red, most toll roads have written in their charter that the tolls are to pay off the cost of building the road as well as maintain until the debt is replayed after that and the tolls need to come off, the game is to remain in debt as long as possible.

Kentucky does it right, I have driven many of the parkways in that state, you can see evidence of toll booths that were removed after the cost to construct the road was repaid.

Drove to Long Island over the weekend, $8 at the Outerbridge going in, $10 at the Verrazzano coming back  I haven't done that drive in years, so I recall paying much less in the past.

Do you have reason to believe $50 million is a reasonable cost for a 1 mile widening project?

Hey here in Upstate NY the through-way would have been paid off a long time ago, there is even places where the land was prepared for complete exits for after the tolls would come down.

Example: Notice the cuts in the land from NY Rt96 to I-90? Rt 96 is the old road before I-490: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=43....mp;t=h&z=16

A few years ago they added maintenance of the Erie Canal to the the throughway authority. Can you say a big ditch that you throw $$$ into?

Instead of making the Thruway toll free and returning operation to DOT, in 1992, the Governor and the State Legislature enacted legislation to further expand the responsibilities of the Authority to include the operation and maintenance of the canal system and authorized additional indebtedness secured by toll revenues to assist with the financing of this new responsibility.

Maybe it can be filled in and that is where the high speed rail can go.

Yes! More than likely they will add the rail project to the through-way authority.

Good point my neighbor!

What I don't understand is why projects cost so much yet take so long to build here. Plus, the quality of most new roads are questionable.

For example, they built a 24 mile inner city freeway from scratch in Melbourne. They had to basically buy 24 miles worth of land and property, including houses in the way. The total project cost $2.5 billion and was completed in 3 years. The project and road is privately leased for 40 years, therefore, it saves the tax payer money. The same project here would cost at least $15 billion and taken at least 10 years. Plus the quality of the roads there are second to none. Street lights, proper marking, reflectors, high impact wire separation between direction, high quality low noise asphalt and modern clear sound barriers.

Also keep in mind blue collar workers in Australia average around $50 an hour. When they work at night, they earn about $120 an hour. A friend of mind who's an architect, quit and went to night shift on large projects. Makes nearly quarter of a mill and has no headaches. I have never seen a road project here going on at night. They usually disrupt people during the day.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.
