Changing name in passport after arriving in the USA

I arrived into New York last Monday. No problems at all. Today I am going to pick up my social security card from the office. What I wondered was how do I now change the name in my passport to my married name and how will it affect my visa as that too is in my maiden name?

Normally you would visit your countries consulate/embassy to change your passport.

Changing it may cause a problem with travelling, as your names won't match. I remember a post here where someone did that, and they carried their marriage certificate to show the name (paper trail) and they didn't have many issues.

Tha is not a problem. After you get married you go to the SS with marriage cert. and have it changed. Your passport doesn't need to be changed.

What you are suggesting is for applicant coming to US on K-1 visa. OP is of CR-1 visa, she is already married.

To OP, if you do want to change your name, you will have to start with going to the court, change your name. Next step will be --

SSN office

Send an email to your countries Embassy and ask them how they process changing names and how long will it take. For India I know I won't have to go personally to the Embassy, Chicago said to send in my marriage certificate and passport via mail and it will be done, so may be your country Embassy follow something like that.

Then its changing name on your GC, it will cost you around $400

Also your state id and your driving licence.

So given all the money spent on GC and also passport, I decided not to change my name.

So I found out I can send my passport to the UK embassy here in the US for $214 to get my name changed. I don't have a green card yet, just the visa page in my passport. Will they not just automatically update my visa/green card when they see my passport s changed? Because obviously the government have to be notified as they are the ones changing it
