Is it just me who doesn't get the way Memorial Day is marketed in the U.S.? These are three emails I received from different sites:

Happy Memorial Day! Free Shipping on Orders of $99 or More

Forget the grill, order Domino's Pizza for Memorial Day.

Free Shipping + Super Sweet Memorial Day Specials!

I personally don't get the 'happy' Memorial Day thing. It is a day, as everyone knows, to take a moment to remember all those that have served this country in wars around the world. In fact this country is at war.

I just think it's very...odd.

Well - it could be look upon as trying to cheer up people on memorial day.

When I walked into Home Depot, they had a sign saying "10% off your purchase if your a vet" - they wanted an ID or some other form to show your a vet, but I only had my USS Dale hat on, and then I showed the cashier my USN tattoo on my arm, and they allowed that for the discount.

I mean, life does go on, and it will go on due to the services of the armed forces.

I am not offended by the campaigns - 12 year vet here.

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

I never noticed this in Canada - which is not to say there was never a remembrance day sale, I just don't remember one - i'm only talking about Calgary of course.

It used to be called Decoration Day, before it was Memorial Day.

And it still has both purposes - to commemorate the war dead, but also to celebrate and decorate the veterans. Yes, celebrate. They had fireworks on Navy Pier in Chicago for Memorial Day, I believe they do in most cities.

Not sure I ever noticed "Remembrance Day" sales either. Maybe I just didn't read the flyers. I know that here in town they do a parade, and a service, and a time of silence at 11:00 a.m. Actually, there are now very few vets here. I often wonder what will happen when there are no more.... :mellow:

I think it's typical for stores to exploit any holiday, just for advertising purposes and draw in more customers. It doesn't matter if said holiday has nothing to do with furniture, etc. it's just a marketing ploy.

That is interesting. I always thought it was the same because Veterans Day is Nov. 11, same as Remembrance Day. And we honour living as well as dead. "Lest we never forget"...
