I'm in the US Army and I just proposed recently to my fiance who is a canadian citizen. I want her to come live with me in the states but I heard someone tell me that during her processing she might have to stay in the states for 2 years during it. I dont want to keep her from her family for 2 years. Is this true? Does me being in the military help at all?

Length of time really depends on you and when you plan to get married.

If you get married and then file to bring your wife here on CR-1 visa she will enter as a conditional permanent resident which she will receive a 2 year green card and she is free to travel immediately. If you wish to bring her here before you marry you will need a K1 fiance visa which means you will need to marry within 90 days of her arrival then apply for Adjustment of Status (AOS) but you can aplly for (AP) Advanced Parole which will allow her to travel but this can take a few months to get.

Stop talking to people with no experience. Ask them "have you done this?"

Being in the military makes no difference. When issued a visa, she will need to come to the USA to get married. She can leave at any time, but cannot return. After marriage you will "adjust her status" and once she has her green card or "advanced parole" she can visit Canada and return all she wants. The AOS takes 2-6 months after filing to complete.

The "two years" comes in when she receives her 10 year green card. The first issued "conditional" green card is good for two years. She can travel to Canada all she wants after that green card is issued.

We live 6 miles from the border and my wife (though not Canadian) travels to Montreal so frequently it is unnerving and she may quite likely have raised the GNP of Canada a few points all by herself.
