What would be the situation if I received all my paperwork, crossed the border, got all my stamps and proper visas and then went back to Canada?

IF I did go back it would only be temporary for at most a few months to finish up some loose ends with selling the place and stuff like that. Could this be seen as abandoning our visa?

The reason I ask all this is because housing prices have obviously dropped and if we sold our place now we'd still have a mortgage. I was thinking of the possibility of moving to the US but coming back for a few months of work and waiting for the price to rise.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Yep,others have done that with a Cr-1 visa! As long as it isn't too long of a stay in Canada.

One doesn't have to activate the Visa right away either--U have like 6 months to do that! Normally from the time u activate the visa at the POE, until u get the actual wallet sized greencard is 1 month. U prob checked off the box on the ds-230 to get ur SSN, BUT majority of the time (well at least often), the SSN doesn't come, and one has to re-apply at ur local SSN office (don't need the actual wallet sized greencard to do that, ur cdn passport with visa in it will suffice)

If u activated ur CR-1 about 6 months priort to ur actual move, you should be good to go!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

OK, I knew about the six months after the interview time frame, but I was wondering about beyond that. I do already have my SSN from when I was in college in the US a few years ago, but I checked off to get another one since my current one reads "Valid with INS authorization".

I was just thinking that if everything doesnt fall into place like we would want in the six months after the interview if a guy could just cross the border get that stuff out of the way and then come back for a few months, no more than 6 at best.

Guess 1 could wait close to 6 months, then activate and then coem back to Canada. or if Mtl gives u a date "ask" if you can have it later. BUT ask if they can give u a confirmed date that way. We had 1 member that postphoned her cr-1 interview (was it neiks???) and it seemed to take forever to get another interview date! I'm not sure why she could not have had the baby say on a Tuesday, and be at the interview on Wednesday? Jezz!! lol!!!!

Since you really only want around 6 months to get everything tied up in Canada, I think it's a good idea to wait to activate it and then take a bit more time after that if you like.

And yes flames, neiks was one of the 'reschedulers'

* = neiks - interview date Dec 22/06 (rescheduled for June 28/07)

* = samaci - interview date Aug 9th (rescheduled for Oct. 5th)

* = Davin and Rachel - interview date March 25th (rescheduled for May 7th)

So there should be no problem with coming back and then later on being refused entry because I was in Canada for a few months, right?

You always have the option of requesting the visa be issued at a later date. When I was at my interview we discussed my concerns with having to cross the border with a visa in my passport but not yet ready to use it. The Consulate Officer advised me they could delay issuance of the visa, then when I was ready to move all I would have to do was send them my passport and they would issue it at that time.
