Due to some unfortunate circumstances that led to the post office returning my initial NOA1 to USCIS, they mailed me out a replacement notice. Then, about a week later, for some reason, they mailed me out yet another replacement notice. The "notice date" on the top is different for each of those. It looks like we are expected to use that date as the receipt date in our timeline. So two questions:

  1. Why do the 2 receipts have different dates? (According to VJ, this is supposed to be the date when they enter your petition into the system and begin processing, so why would this happen twice?)
  2. Which date do I use on my timeline?

K1: 01/15/2009 (mailed I-129F) - 06/23/2009 (visa received)

AOS: 08/08/2009 (mailed I-485, I-765, & I-131) - 10/29/2009 (received GC)

I recommend registering at USCIS & seeing what date is on their website.

I have already registered, and I only see a "last updated" date, which is not the receipt date. I wasn't aware that the receipt date is available online. If so, where exactly?

Log in, see where your case number is? (a hyperlink)...click on that. it will take you to the page that says when they received it!

That hyperlink seems to take you to a page that displays the most recent status of your case, not necessarily a message indicating when they received it.

Unless you have been approved or have had an RFE sent out it will more than likely say on a certain date they sent you a notice on how they will proceed on your case. Use that date. And hey, two NOA 1's is better than none!

I-751 file: 11/07/11

NOA1 date: 11/10/11

Biometrics: 11/30/11

Approval: 08/17/12

Hold what you got and maintain.

Ah I see. Yes I see the message about how they tried to send me a message on Feb 11 but it was returned. I'll use that date. Makes sense. Thanks!

P.S. Since I have an extra NOA1, I guess I could lend it it someone who didn't get there NOA1 yet?

I should mention that my current status is as follows:

Receipt Number: ...................

Application Type: I129F, PETITION FOR FIANCE(E)

Current Status: DOCUMENT OTHER THAN CARD OR TRAVEL DOCUMENT BEING HELD FOR 180 DAYS SINCE RETURNED AS UNDELIVERABLE

On February 11, 2009, the post office returned your document I129F, PETITION FOR FIANCE(E) as undeliverable. We will hold it for 180 days from February 11, 2009 to allow you time to contact us. If you do not contact us at 1-800-375-5283 within 180 days, this document will be destroyed and you will need to file a new application or application for replacement with fee.

You can choose to receive automatic case status updates, which will be sent via email. Please click here to create an account online.

Note: Case Status is available for Applications and Petitions which were filed at USCIS Service Centers. If you filed at a USCIS Local Office, your case status may not be reviewable online but for processing times on forms filed at that Office please, click here.

If you have a question about case status information provided via this site, or if you have not received a decision from USCIS within the current processing time listed, please contact the USCIS Customer Service at (800) 375 – 5283 or 1-800-767-1833 (TTY).

It's been like that for about a month now. USCIS claims that this strange message is in reference to the original NOA1 that was returned due to inability to deliver for whatever reason. So, I never saw the typical status message that tells me how they will proceed. I'm assuming it's a form letter, so no big loss. Still, I'm wondering why each NOA1 copy they sent me has a different receipt date. Maybe I'm worried about nothing, but does anyone know why?

I'm not all that knowledgable in the ways of USCIS but if I were you I'd use the date on the first NOA1 you received.
