Hi,

This probably won't be an issue as EAD is probably 30 days away or so before any work will come in. BUT...how does EAD work with someone who is self employed where the government doesn't really get involved until tax time ie April 2010.

Second, a well-run company will ask contractors (self employed people doing work for companies) to complete a W-9 prior to payment. W-9 requires a SS #.

He can have a SSN without having the actual EAD though.

And yeah, it is illegal to start working before you receive the EAD but if everything is dated after the approval date, such as invoices and receipts, then I doubt there will be anyone who makes a problem out of it :)

Its a "restricted" SS --- not valid for work.

And VJ posters should not be suggesting that people break laws --- even if it is possible.

When he fills out forms, he usually do not show or add the social security card.. I never did anyways, and there is no way for them to know this as long as they do not look at it.

As for suggesting that people break laws, I never said that and I don't see it in my post either. I said that it is indeed illegal to work before he has the EAD card and that nobody will make a problem out of it when everything is dated after the approval date. Thing is, it looked like you were impying in your post that he would not be able to have a SS without the EAD which is not true, and thats why I replied on your post.. it has nothing to do with suggesting something illegal.
