Once you receive the EAD or green card you can go apply for the SSN.

Guys, you can get your SSN before your EAD or green card. We went 2 months after entry and just went to the Social Security Office and the man promptly filled in our stuff into the computer and gave us a receipt telling us we will get the SSN after 2 weeks. He didn't ask a single question. Just saw it was a K-1 visa and did his thing. I do not know what kind of visa you have, but with a K-1 you are allowed to get a SSN. I had even printed out some homeland security memorandum which is suggested in the forums here, but it was not necessary to show him anything.

You are allowed to get a SSN between 14 days and 75 days after arrival in the US with a K1 visa. After this timeline you have to wait for a EAD or green card.

We plan to wait until we are married (a few weeks) so the name on the SS card is correct, and we don't need to make any changes. Just a preference.

If the I-94 has expired it becomes a bit more difficult and lengthy. I took Claudeth two weeks after she arrived and she received the card in another week. We couldn't change her name on the card until she received something official from the USCIS which happened to be her EAD. It took about six weeks to get the new card with her married name.

By the way!

Hello. I think it's interesting I too live in Arizona and never received a work permit! I just had my interview 3.09.09 and it was a piece of cake. We were only asked the basic required questions. We were outta there in less than 15 mins.

However, unfortunately you will have to wait until you receive your actual greencard to apply for a SSN. So it takes like in total a month after approval to receive both GC and SSN. Good luck @ ure interview if you still haven't had it.
