LOS ANGELES – Police said Thursday they will investigate death threats against octuplet mom Nadya Suleman and advise her publicist on how to handle a torrent of other nasty messages that have flooded his office.

Word that the 33-year-old single, unemployed mother is receiving public assistance to care for the 14 children she conceived through in vitro fertilization has stoked furor among many people.

Police Lt. John Romero said officers were meeting with Suleman's publicist Mike Furtney about the flood of angry phone calls and e-mail messages against Suleman, her children and Furtney.

"We are aware of the media accounts of the threats, and that they are being sent to the West Los Angeles detectives for appropriate action," Romero said.

Furtney said 500 new e-mails were received early Thursday.

"We're talking to the Los Angeles Police Department to get their best advice as to how to regard these messages," Furtney said as the phone in his office rang constantly.

He is also consulting with a security professional to get advice on any precautions that might need to be taken.

Suleman is living in an undisclosed location and spends time with all her kids every day, Furtney said. The octuplets are expected to remain in the hospital for several more weeks.

Not all the calls have been angry. One family from the Midwest has invited Suleman and her brood to live on their farm, Furtney said.

"One thing that keeps me from jumping out the window is that we've heard from many people offering some kind of support: clothing, food, financial or other help," Furtney said.

Suleman has been supporting her six other children with $490 a month in food stamps and receives Social Security disability payments for three of the youngsters that could total $2,379 a month.

She has estimated her in vitro fertilization procedures have cost $100,000.

Suleman has said she saved for the treatments by working double shifts and also used money from a disability award exceeding $165,000 that she received after an on-the-job back injury.

The benefits were discontinued last year.

The Suleman octuplets' medical costs have not been disclosed, but in 2006, the average cost for a premature baby's hospital stay in California was $164,273, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Eight times that equals $1.3 million.

For a single mother, the cost of raising 14 children through age 17 ranges from $1.3 million to $2.7 million, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

I remember someone saying this would happen especially with the economic crisis here, some people are bound to be offended but writting threat emails...i think thats a bit too far!

I personally loathe the fact that she's getting knocked up on purpose after having so many kids already and currently receiving government aid. However, that's not my problem to fix and I just ignore her. Nothing good comes out of wishing harm on others. Karma is a scary thing.

i dont think its right to want her dead or to threaten to kill her.

and i hope that she finds away to support her children on her own i pray that God grants her the ability to provide everything that the children need in the future by work from her own hands.....................................................

It's knee jerk reaction to a fvcked up situation. The answer is legislation, not death threats. Taxpayers should not be on the hook for this stupidness. The laws have not kept up with medical technology. It's bad enough that humans breed like rats and will likely push the human population from roughly 6 billion to 9 billion by 2050. The fact is...that if you can't feed 'em, don't breed 'em. Artificial insemination should be against the law. Period. Making babies is not a right that the US taxpayer should be forced to fund.

She has estimated her in vitro fertilization procedures have cost $100,000.

She had money for that but little money to raise them with.

Suleman has said she saved for the treatments by working double shifts and also used money from a disability award exceeding $165,000 that she received after an on-the-job back injury.

How bad could back be when she managed to carry around 8 babies and care for six other small kids?

For a single mother, the cost of raising 14 children through age 17 ranges from $1.3 million to $2.7 million, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

She come up with the money with more disability claims and cashing in on her fame. She actually claimed on TV she would pay for everything on her own after she gets her Master's degree and gets a job. Yeah right.

This whole story is so unbelievable. At times, I cannot even imagine having one child, much less fourteen and with no father! This woman is clearly not thinking clearly and I hope someone keeps an eye on all of those children.

Sincerely, 6kids is already a lot.... Especially with the economy and the stress of parenthood. Children demand a lot more from parents now than they used to before because of the times we live in.

People have committed suicides, murdered their families to escape the harsh reality and suffering that comes with not having...even though mentally they would have to have been ill to do that...

So its really amazing that a young lady would have 6 kids and opt for 8more, knowingly. Could it be that after recieving a lot of $$$ from the disability grants or whatever she wants to cash in on more? Maybe its all just natural, its awesome to have 14 children, yea yea, but the cost? For every action there is a reaction. So she too should have seen this coming, i only hope they are well protected and all the kids fare well and grow healthy.

Children are gifts from God although she paid for them like she went groceries shopping.

And payed all that to have them wow!

If it was just her il say "HELL TO THE NO" but for the innocent, lovely, new born babies..... who can refuse or let them suffer?

If you wondered how they spent our taxes.... there goes some of it!

I may sound harsh with the following: (warned)

She is living with her parents, has no job, is living off the government and taxpayers money already.

2 of her original 6 are autistic

She has had at least 2 surgeries on her face alone.

Where do you come up with $100,000 while living off of food stamps and disability checks or whatever

Her aging mom takes care of the 6 kids (did you see how tired and exhausted she looked on tv. The Grandmother that is)

I am furious at this lady. She is completely irresponsible and in mu opinion had the kids to get free stuff and have her 15 minutes of fame. Shame on her and the Stupid DR that fertilized her.

There are thousands of millions of children on this earth that need care and parents and help and she has the nerve to have 14 kids with no means of support or way to properly care for them.

The fact is that the present administration is on track to roll back the welfare reform the Republicans forced on Bill Clinton. He didn't want to do it, but once he was forced into it he took full credit for the success of the legislation. The fact is that when government subsidizes bad behavior...we get more of it. We will see more of this ####### in coming years. Dims love unwed mothers. It is their bread and butter.

Totally irresponsible behaviour. Did anyone notice in her Dateline interview they showed her touching her babies in the incubator and she had those acrylic nails done!!!? What nerve! No money to support your kids but can go spend it getting your nails done?

Beacause of these grants and free passages, you see a lot of kids experiemnting with sex to get pregnant because they think oh finally, il get an apartment of my own and pay $20 monthly, get free food and raise my teddy bear in it!

Its say go ahead get pregnant babies...we got your back!

Its disgusting when i see them come on tyra banks show to say yea i want to have a baby cos i think its cute, then you ask how do you care for the child? She ll say the government would... meanwhile hardworking people pay hell through their nose on insurance for proper healthcare!

Dims love unwed mothers. It is their bread and butter.

I think you really need to watch your comments. It's awfully frightening up on that high horse.

Warning - rant ahead:

I too think it's ridiculous for this woman to have so many children. I don't care if you're in college/grad school whatever. Be responsible. I am completely unopposed to couples (or single women) choosing to have 14 kids....if they have the means with which to support the children. If you have to rely on public assistance and you continue to have children, especially with no father, well then shame on you.

There should be nothing wrong with a woman, man, family, etc. using public assistance SHORT TERM if it's needed. Those who think all people who use PA are losers and drains on the economy will, I hope, never have the need for it. However, having 14 children with no way to support them and relying on other people to help and to pay is wrong, IMHO.

And by the way...I'm one of those Democrats Peejay is whining about.

Nobody makes policy decisions based on the actions of one person. This is not normal behaviour. It's not going to happen every day, if ever again. The family have to face most of the consequences of this persons decisions, not 'greater society' no matter how much people think they do 'suffer' because of her weird choices.
