The pretend bipartisan honeymoon ends: McCain declares opposition to stimulus

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) told "Fox News Sunday" this morning that he would not support the stimulus package as the House Democrats have written it because it includes too much wasteful spending.

The stimulus currently includes $275 billion in tax cuts and doesn't include Republican input or a spending timeline, McCain said.

"There should be an end point to all of this spending, say two years ... The plan was written by the Democratic majority in the House primarily. So yeah, I think there has to be major rewrites, if we want to stimulate the economy," McCain said. "I am opposed to most of provisions in the bill. As it stands now. I would not support it."

McCain wouldn't say whether he would filibuster it.

"We need serious negotiations," he said. "We're losing sight of what the stimulus is all about and that is job creation."

That said, I agree that there's a real danger of this stimulus package running out of control. Obama needs to keep the Congressional Democrats in line.

He's right to criticise it but I think his focus is off.

The main problem with the bailout, as I understand it, is not pork barrel spending but simply the lack of accountability. There's no clear picture of what exactly we bought with the money.

No the main problem is there should be no bailouts or so called stimulus plans at all. They should only be discussing a spending bill that pays for the Government we want and need. Not handing out this money to other non Government entities.

That Obama! He sure is a go getter! His careless decisions will be the fall of our country. I just hope there are more like McCain that refuse to let that happen!
