Mean Center of US Population used to be near DC but isn't anymore

In demographics, the center of population of a region is the geographical point nearest to all the inhabitants of that region, on average.

See how the 'center' moves west from 1790 to 2000. To me, this says the capital of the US shouldn't be in DC anymore. It made sense in 1790 but not today.

St. Louis or Kansas City, maybe?

Are most other countries' capitals at or near the population center? Has any other capital been moved when the population center moved?

Good point Scott. The only recent Capital relocation that I can think of is Lagos-Abuja, Nigeria. Lagos is "hugely" populated with nearly 8 million residents. Meanwhile Abuja has less than 500,000 residents. I believe this move was based upon the paranoia of Sani Abacha, the deceased former leader.
