The US is part of the AMERICAN continent, therefore, Nessa's comment is correct. The idea that the word "American" belongs to the US is wrong, that's the reason why the term "american citizen" when referring just to US citizens is not correct. Mexicans, Nicaraguans, Guatemalans, Canadians etc ARE American citizens as well. Comprende?

Only US citizens are Americans. People from Canada are Canadians, not Americans. People from Mexico are Mexican, not Americans.

A couple of things to ponder.... while it's true that Canadians and Mexicans are technically also Americans, everyone DOES know which people are being referred to when the term American is used. What's more, what would a Canadian or Mexican who is bothered by the use of the term American to refer to citizens of the US suggest we be called? USians, USicans? Next, show me a Canadian or Mexican who would WANT to be referred to by the term American anyway.....

What is the problem with the word 'America' meaning two different things in two different parts of the world?

For purposes of this article, everyone knows what 'America' means. Let's not be argumentative.

Like that's going to happen, brother/sister if this was possible, the world would be a better place, not the scum it is right now.

Humans will be humans after all and will favor by nature those that resemble most to them. In other words, unconsciously they will favor those with their same features, religion, language etc.

Imagine by John Lennon would be a perfect theme song for this issue

P.S. and for the record, I never said I didn't distinguished Americans from US citizens, I just explain my point of view regarding the fact that calling US Citizens just Americans is incorrect. That's a fact. The correct, and already used, term is US Citizens, NOT USians nor USicans

What about the Panama Canal? That cuts it into two continents. It is no longer one continent as it is now two separate land masses.
