RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A Henrico County eighth-grader was suspended from school for a day and kicked off the baseball team for eating a staff member's cookie.

Jeremy Maitland was in the Hungary Creek Middle School kitchen one day last month filling a water cooler for a baseball game. Caryl Maitland says her son told school officials that he ate a cookie after someone knocked over a cookie jar and he tried to pick them up.

She says the family received a letter from the assistant principal telling them the cookies were a staff member's personal food. Jeremy was disciplined under the school's theft code.

The boy's mother says she understands the boy had to be disciplined, but she says eating a cookie and taking someone's laptop computer should not warrant the same punishment. They've appealed the suspension.

Superintendent Fred Morton declined to discuss specifics but added that he reviewed the case and found the school's decision reasonable.

It's only a day. If he stole a laptop he would get more time off.

Being kicked out of the baseball squad, that's the harshest punishment... Will he care about the one day suspension from school? I don't think so...

oops. I skipped over the part about getting kicked off the team. That IS harsh.

That's a shame. I wonder first of all, how it was found out that he actually ate a cookie, unless that person was counting their cookies. Secondly, unless there was a name on that cookie jar, how was he to know they belonged to someone in particular?

I'm with you sister frances........chocolate chip or macadamia nut is grounds for dismissal. Peanut butter cookies, Nillas or Fig Newtons get you a one day suspension and the 15 day DL.

My guess is he confessed he did, not realizing what a big deal the school nazis were gonna make of it.

Well, at least he's learned one of the great lessons in life: Deny! Deny! Deny!

I'm so sick of dealing with the school here, I could hurl. I mean, seriously...I'm so glad he only has 2 more days and is out for the year. Corey is a pretty good kid, but like anyone his age can get in a bit of trouble from time to time..nothing at all major. I get really sick of him getting a detention for not having a pencil in class(written right on the slip what it was for) etc etc. Petty #######....wonder what would happen if they had to deal with a REAL problem..gawd. A freakin' cookie..and off the team. CHOPS! I mean, yeah...Corey SHOULD have a pencil in class...but when I was in school, you didn't get a detention unless you actually DID something..harassing another student, talking back to the teacher, etc etc. IMO, that's the way it should be. HIs 3rd grade teacher, back then, told me he should be in ritalin. I told her where she could stick that, nicely, and then more firmly when she insisted. I saw some of the way some of those kids at school acted, and while Corey is NO saint....he was certainly more well-behaved than some I witnessed...and I live/d with him at home all the time...he was always an energetic kid, but not climbing up the walls or anything and needing to be zombied-out with ritalin!!! I know some kids MAY need it, adn that's all fine and good...but I don't think it was the teacher's place to recommend that to me. Petty #######...I just get SO sick of it...as I said..YAY only 2 MORE DAYS this year...hahaha :) M.
