I flew on JAL for one leg of my flight, they were significantly better than the other airlines in terms of service, and the quality of food etc. Most of my flight was via United, and I had at least one flight on Cathay Pacific, I didn't really see a difference in any of those flights really, but JAL definitely stood out.

Off the top of my head, JAL gives you a hot steamed cloth, I imagine this is a much nicer feature if you are closer to the end of a journey than the beginning but it was still cool... the chop sticks were much nicer (yeah, I got chop sticks from two other airlines... but these were larger, and had angled ends so that you could 'clamp' onto things... two flat surfaces could face each other), the food was much better and had a bit of variety to it, I don't remember all the details but I do remember it was a lot better than the other food, and I also remember the small cup of ube ice cream (if you happen to like it, enjoy, I'm not sure how available that flavor is in the states... there may be something close but I'm not sure so sure about that). It seems they also may have come around more often with drinks too... I know that in the future if I have a choice I'll definitely give preference to JAL flights whenever possible.

The way one of the flight attendants explained it, was flights over a certain length (I think 2 and 1/2 hours or 3 hours) would get a meal, shorter flights would get drink service only. On longer flights you will likely get two meals, a small meal/snack somewhere in the middle too, and drinks on a fairly regular basis. You usually get a choice between beef or chicken, though JAL was fish or (I forget, beef, chicken or maybe pork), the small meal I had was a ramen noodle cup of soup type thing, I think those were on united flights, you might get hungry but you probably won't be so hungry you have to eat at your various layovers. I guess it depends on how well your appetite handles airplanes and airplane food though, also, the major airports which is probably all you'll see, have lots of restaurants in them so if you find yourself hungry on a long layover, there are options.

Have a safe flight Pink.... You will be ok flying alone. I posted something awhile back about going to the airport websites and checking out the layout of each airport that you go through. This helps get you aquainted with getting from point A to point B...
