Thank you very much. :)

I had MMR when I was a child and a Tetanus when I was around 14/15 so I might not need them again.

You WILL definately need boosters for these, but you should be able to get them free on the NHS from your local GP without any fuss. It only equates to two injections, so it's not too bad.

I'm way ahead of myself here, but I've read someone say that it's a good idea to get the required vaccincations before the medical since they can be done on the NHS rather than paying the extra fees.

- It this a good idea?

- Which vaccinations are required for people from the UK? (I've also read that it's different for each country?)

Thanks.

IN fact as a a K1 applicant you may not be required to be vaccinated until youy adjust status later on in the states.

Dooley, just because YOU don't want the vaccinations done, does not mean that everyone else here will agree with you. Gemmie asked for info regarding what vaccinations are required for the K-1 (sans waiver). ;)

Gemmie ~ In answer to your question, yes it is a good idea to get them done at your local docs. Make an appointment with your local practice nurse and she can administer the shots for you. Get her to print out and sign the vaccination records for you, taken them to the medical and they'll sign them off for you.

If your local GP practice does charge you, it will be much less in comparison to what it'll cost you at the medical! Good luck!

I am in the process of getting my jabs on the NHS. It is free (excellent - make the most of it while you can!) and I am happy to have something to do while I wait to hear from the Embassy in London.

I took this chart to my GP surgery nurse:

http://uk.usembassy.gov/cons_new/visa/iv/vaccinechart.html

And she has been very cool in finding out what I need, and making sure I have the records to prove what I have had.

I feel odd having MMR at the age of 35, but better safe than sorry!

after speeking with my gp i thought mmr was one time thing? i.e. no boosters set for lifetime.

as for hpv you can get them from your doctors depending on who your doc is you have to ask, mine in the end couldn't full stop. if you are above the reconmended age which if your legally old enough to marry you will be, you have to pay for it here. i'm waiting for the usa for hpv cos its about £89 a shot appossed to £120 but there have been lucky peeps on here that wanggled a free one on the nhs. the tdap i'm unsure. i thought you had to get tenus every 10 yr but according to my research (i'm reading nhs choices, its what the gp will look at aswell) apparently after 15/16 booster you should be set unless you get bitten or something then they give you a booster to b safe. so if i'm reading that right tetnus i shouldnt need either, still not sure about diptheria and then polio was done i think, so should b ok aswell. but tdap is tetnus diptheria and petussis, but i asked my doctor about that vaccination and he didn't know what it is. i hope you get more luck than me when speaking to your gp cos i'm having to teach my self. :(

oh in addition to my headache my mum said i had chickenpox as a child and she took me to my gp. therefore i should be ok for that shot which is £60 and last time i check not avaliable in uk. but it might have changed. but the gp couldn't find it in my records. <_<

The chart says unavailable in the UK so the embassy shouldn't see it as a problem. :)

true but i think you can buy it at the medical in london but its £60

the only thing i advise is go ahead and try to get it all dont in the most cost effective and efficent way possible but be prepared to have to tell the doctors their job and posibly be made to run round in circles. i'm not saying dont get it done on the nhs i'm just saying that unlike some others experiences mine dont seem to know or be able to do anything. :bonk::girlwerewolf2xn:

If you have had chickenpox as a child then you won't need the varicella vaccine. The medical peeps just ticked it off when I told them I'd had it.

did they not need to see proff or a note in your records?

Bruce just told them he had had it as a kid, and showed a (very faded) scar. That was enough.

Cheers for answering. I do have a faded scar from something have to see if that works

All of this Vaccination stuff is the most confusing part for me!, I read over the thread lots of great advice, so thanks guys!.

I was going to call my GP tomorrow and ask about getting my immunisation lists, would I be better getting an appointment with him ? Or should I request an appointment with my GP nurse? I have no idea what I have already had, and what I need!

I would like to delay the HPV unitil I get to the USA, purely because I would feel alot more settled.

Yes I think MMR is for life, but I had the measles and rubella jabs as a kid, but contracted mumps so I can't have had the full MMR.

I have no way of proving that I had mumps, and therefore gained immunity, so I am just going to get it done again, free, so that I can get it on my record. It doesn't do you any harm (apparently, according to my nice nurse), and I just want to avoid a whopping Dr's bill at my medical.

I'm going to my Dr's today and hope to come out with a nice clear medical record to take to my immigration medical.

I would ring your surgery and tell them that you need to get your immunisation record up to date for emigrating to the USA, mine did not bat an eyelid at this request.

They should have access to all your immunisation history (mine had records of my childhood jabs from the early 70s!) and they should be able to look at the list (from US Embassy) and tell you what you are missing. Don't worry, just call them and ask. Hopefully they will book you a slot with the nurse who will look at your history and get you the ones you are missing. I am having mine in two or three batches, as she recommended, not all at once.

Then, when you are up to date, ask them for a print out of you imunisation history and ask someone to sign it (I don't know if it needs to be signed but I think I'm going to ask for it to be).

Thankyou Scarlett, I followed your advice and rang them up this morning, they said they would have the nurse call tomorrow to schedule an appointment.

I have also had my measles and rubella jabs but not the mumps, and I am fairly sure I have already had my Tdap so hopefully there will not be to many needles in my near future.

I'm hoping that all I will have to pay for at my medical in London is the full exam at 180 , anything else I dont mind paying in dollars in the states.
