Bradbury's cool - I've met him a few times in LA. Very old now though - and wheelchair bound.

Not too many of the old-school guys around any more.

Richard Matheson is another fave of mine. I am Legend is probably one of my favorite novels. I also like a lot of his short stories (interesting story behind the writing of "Duel" - it was based on an incident when he was run off the road, and he and his wife basically drove out through Ventura Country so he could make a note of all the things along the route as part of his prep work).

I have a signed copy of The Incredible Shrinking Man when he did a book signing a few years ago.

I just got Physics of the Impossible through work. Interesting stuff.

for Kaku number 6, read parallel worlds dude.. that's 10 times better than physics of the impossible

and also there's a good movie about quantum theories with Marlee Matlin called -what the bleep! do we know

Mario Vargas Llosa ---- The Feast of the Goat is freaking amazing.

Rulfo drove me insane in high school.

Borges drives me insane today; but he is one the greatest.

Bradbury's first works are cool, then he went pretty pyscho.

And for funnies: Guadalupe Loaeza and German Dehesa.

My fav Victorians are of course:

Jane Austen

Emily Bronte (The other two I read but wasn't so enthralled)

George Elliot

Thomas Hardy

Wilkie Collins

Lewis Caroll

William Thackaray

Anthony Trollope

Oscar Wilde (more plays than books, but the Picture of Dorian Gray is fab)

If we include poetry I would have to give a thumbs up to G.M Hopkins, despite his religious fervour!

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Gustave Flaubert - Madame Bovary

Issabel Allende

Diana Gabaldon

That's all I could think of for now...I'm sure I've left out some, but these writers come to mind most often as 'favorites'.

I like Arthur Conan-Doyle. The Sherlock Holmes stories are fun. With no shortage of horrible TV and movie adaptations.

The BBC did Hound of the Baskervilles (again) a couple of years ago with Richard Roxburgh as Holmes. Grotesque miscasting...

Jeremy Brett was the best by far.
