Many muslims consider the bible a holy book too. Many Arabs are christian. Religion is strange to me. At least when it comes to the whole idea of what is and isn't sacred.

The soldier got what he had coming to him, it should end there.

religion is not strange, some people are...when disrespecting their own book and prophet doesn't satisfy them, they try another one.

i am muslim, my christian friend gave me the bible 2 years ago..i still have it, and i still read it.

Not everyone has the same intelligence as you. You may be able to know what it is to mean peace, while others well, don't quite understand what peace is.

You give them 1+1, and they give you 3 instead of 2. Afterall, if everyone was smart there wouldn't be poverty.

it's about faith not intelligence, after all a rich person is the one who doesnt't need anything.

i don't consider someone shooting bullets through any book as an extremist. but it is fun yanking your chain :D

butthead :)

You've got to admit that in a country where religion is very influential both culturally and politically that this was a pretty stupid thing to do.

It sure isn't how one would go about wining the hearts and minds. ;)

well you don't win a war by winning the hearts and minds of your enemies, ie; Vietnam. You win a war by making their cities look like Berlin, Dresden, Nagasaki and Heroshimo.

Heroshimo?

it's like Regligious

Hmm...Interesting. From my excerpt, you pointed out that faith is not equal to intelligence.

The government of Iraq has rejected the Bush administrations apologies for this incident, and is demanding that the soldier be returned to Iraq to stand trial and face 'punishment.' If you want to truly see how 'peaceful' a religion Islam is, then let this travesty happen. I have to assume that we would never agree to this.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24724080/

Select quote:

"Iraq's government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said Bush's apology was not enough.

"We need to try this soldier since he committed a grievous crime. This is what the Iraqi government wants. It is not satisfied with just an apology," he said"

End quote.

Obviously we won't agree to this - even when there is a heinous crime its dealt with in-house, rather than allowing service personnel to fall under the purview of foreign courts (or indeed - the International Criminal Court - for war crimes).

What I will say here is that it makes you wonder just what it is we think we can achieve with regard to "victory". Are we kidding ourselves that we can change attitudes - when the democratically appointed government is making these sorts of demands?

I think that is where diplomacy does step in, with this kind of discrepancy over what is a crime and when human rights should supersede religious freedoms. However, it's also foolish to believe that the goverment of Iraq will not try to appease the more militant extreme religious fringes when they have no certainty that their precarious goverment is going to continue to be bolstered by the US into 2009 and beyond.

However were a soldier to use a bible for target practice in the US do you think some of our fundamental christians wouldn't call for some sort of punishment to be meted out? It wouldn't surprise me in the least - it may even be a criminal act in some states for all I know.

Is that the punishment they are calling for on this then?

You have missed my point entirely though, I clearly stated that human rights should supersede religious freedoms whether in the US or in Iraq.

Maybe you and 6 are suggesting that a Muslim country is incapable of implementing a humanitarian criminal justice system though?

has the punishment for this been announced? if not, do you think it's worth taking the risk of loss of life or limb?

Maybe you and 6 are suggesting that a Muslim country is incapable of implementing a humanitarian criminal justice system though?

i can't speak for him, but from my viewpoint it's not like there is a muslim country with a stellar track record in that regard.

I imagine if the influence of those groups is as pervasive as it appears to be - that to say this "winning" this war (whatever that means nowadays) is going to be an uphill battle, if indeed it is possible at all.
