Don't give any original documents like birth certificate, 10th class certificate, etc., unless asked for. Usually they only need to see them at the Consulate interview, then they return them back. Until then, sending copies of everything is fine.

Not just copy but certified copy from the issuing agency. So if your wife can certify those from whichever agency issued it, it would be better.

I am gonna send my original cerificate instead of certified copies, although getting certified copy task is frustrating and kind of impossible in some places. i tried to get certified copy of marriage certificate from DC office, first they refuse to give it and when I presurise do so then after a week they sent a photocopy of my marriage cert with their superinteded's sign without any seal or stamp but as we know without stamp it is worthless so i have duplicate copy of birth certificate(translated), original of marriage cert,PCC from SSP,copy of passport.

waiting for PCC from Passport office.

Most people send in a copy (photocopy/xerox) of their certified marriage certificate and it works. I got 3 certified copies (I believe they were $13 each) by going in person to Recorder's office, and sent in one with AOS packet. At my interview they said they could not find the marriage certificate in my packet! So I handed over the photocopy I had made of it (not even certified copy), and all was fine.

Of course this was AOS not to get the visa. But I would suggest definitely NOT getting rid of your only original copy!

where do u get the "certified true copy" in India

Marriage certificate -------- local registrar can't issue certified copy

Birth Certificate -------- mucipal office won't issue certified copy either

PCC --------- you can ask for duplicate PCC form the Passport Office and they will give that

PCC Local Police ----- they can't certifiy copies either

so now who is India can certify Xerox/Photocopy to make it a "certified copy" .......... even on Madras embassy's website it talks about certified true copy doesn't say who needs to certify them ........... i am asking to DS-230 ..... i can't sent the original to U.S with DS-230 because i will need them at the time of interview

It's confusing I agree. When I went to get a certified copy of our marriage certificate here in USA, the clerk explained to me that the "original document" was never given out, but always kept on record in the county clerk's office. But I could order "certified copies", which actually look like the original but are not. So maybe all the "original documents" we have are actually "certified copies".

The language is the key here. Maybe in India they call it a original document and you can get more than one copy of it. For instance if you "lose" the birth certificate won't they issue another one, for a fee? Maybe it is the same as in USA, that they NEVER give out the "original" document but they are all "certified copies."

In india they keep a copy(just a legal sized green page) with them for case refrence and they give you piece of paper. in other words they instruct you to print two page, one for them and another for you.

i asked them about certified copy, first she refused and she said there is nothing like certified copy, in her eyes certified means notarised.

After 2-3 visits she told me to go through RTI(Right to information ACT),Even that was her trick, I applied through RTI and after 6 days got a photocopy of my marriage certificate which was signed by one of their superinteded butnot stamped.

The conclusion is we need to send original certificate.

Well, I don’t know if I should sent the “original” to NVC … if its lost..its not easy to get another one …. I was thinking about having the First-Class magistrate certifies the documents and sending it in. First-Class magistrate is the highest body who can certify anything in India
