No - but as usual you completely overreact and write off an entire country's legal system on the basis of one sensationalist case you read about in the news.

I could probably find a dime a dozen "soft" rulings in the Australian courts. Would that mean the entire legal system there is a soft option?

In a word. No.

The Australian legal system mirrors the UK. Though the courts in the UK seem to be much softer on punishment.
