Unprecedented breach of security, Israeli Shin Bet refuses to cooperate with US Secret Service to protect former President Carter

JERUSALEM, April 14 (Reuters) - Israel's secret service declined to assist U.S. agents guarding former U.S. President Jimmy Carter during a visit in which Israeli leaders shunned him over his plans to meet Hamas, U.S. sources said on Monday.

...

An Israeli security source said the Shin Bet security service provided no protection to Carter during his visit to the Jewish state because no request was made.

Asked about the Israeli account, Carter's delegation, which had previously declined to comment, told Reuters in a statement: "The Carter delegation inquired with both the lead agent of the Secret Service detail (protecting Carter) and the State Department Regional Security Officer and were told unequivocally that an official request for assistance had been made."

American sources close to the matter said the Shin Bet, which helps protect visiting dignitaries and is overseen by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's office, declined to meet the head of Carter's Secret Service detail or provide his team with assistance as is customary during such visits.

...

An American source described as "unprecedented" the lack of Shin Bet cooperation with the U.S. Secret Service, which protects all current and former U.S. presidents, as well as Israeli leaders when they visit the United States.

This trip could only be worse if Carter had the likes of Nancy Pelosi and Jesse Jackson accompanying him......

Jimmy's without a doubt the worst president of the twenieth century and this doesn't help his legacy, that for sure!

Timeline

Carter is like a 100 years old (actually only 84) so it shouldn't surprise anyone if he makes strange decisions or people take advantage of him. His past diplomatic accomplishments are stellar; visit Soviet leader, 6 months later, Soviets send troups into Afganistan (did he advise Bush also?); visit North Korea, North Korea continues to successfully develop of nuclear weapons (Carter was served on a nuclear sub so maybe he gave them some pointers). I believe Carter has good intentions but has a 'simpleminded' view of the world.

How do you provide security to a tool that wants to go to a terrorists house? Blow it up before he gets there, is all I can think of.

Typically, the State Department wants to be informed in advance of official visits.

If protocol is ignored, they do get pretty angry about that.
