How long can you be out of the country with AP documents and no green card yet?

A few months would be safe but anything beyond that could be 'abandoning residency' especially since you don't even have the greencard yet. After the greencard its generally supposed to be ok to travel for up to 6 months. Also, remember your AP is only good for one year or so, in any case. What do you want to do and for how long - explain it and someone who has done that can help you with their experience. Good Luck

Well he might need to go to his home country for a while... But I don't want to screw anything up upon returning if he's been gone too long. I'm guessing somewhere along the lines of two months?! Just throwing a number out there.

Two months should not be a problem but he may get his biometrics/AOS appointment in that time frame so he may have to rush back. Good Luck

oh i should have said he already had biometrics, received his EAD/AP, but his case has not been touched or transferred since december 20th.
