I am pretty far along with the preparation of my I-129 form. I WAS previously trying to find a lawyer, but now I am pretty confident that I will be ready to file soon without a lawyer's help.

Am I being foolish by not hiring a lawyer? Will I need a lawyer anyway to complete the other phases of the process?

Many only get a lawyer involved is something complex comes up, like a foreign citizen having an overstay in the USA that needs a waiver filed for. You say you already filed the I-129F, so you are already started.

A lawyer cannot make the process go any faster.

So far we have DIYed this from K-1 to Green-Card, and plan on DIY the conditions lifting, and naturalization.

Yah, just inform yourself as well as possible on the processes and if unsure about something, this forum is a great place to ask...or rather use the forum search feature, as many questions have been answered already.

Best of luck

It seems like everybody who's gotten a lawyer has been screwed up by the lawyer not knowing what he/she is doing and has regretted it. You don't need one.

Summer 2001 - met my Scottish boy

December 18th, 2007 - proposal in Madrid's Botanical Gardens with a duck standing behind him going 'food?'

A former "K-1er" recommended that I use a company called "Nevesta" (Russian for "Bride"). They are a third the cost of an attorney, and they do much more. My girl is from Ukraine, and speaks Russian. They translated all Russian documents to English (like her Birth Certificate), and they also communicate with her in Russian, to help her with the steps she needs to perform. No expensive attorney would ever do that. They claim to have a 100% approval rate, no Visa has been denied or rejected. I must say that I am very pleased with the service so far. I'm not sure if they only deal with Russian-speaking countries.

Good luck to you on your visa journey...

Here is my official "cut & paste" answer to this issue...

Unless you have some very special circumstances, hiring an attorney does nothing but drain funds better spent on yourselves and your future together. An attorney stands in the same line we do, with no time savings what so ever. The paperwork is far from complicated if you can read and follow simple instructions. Have a question? There are tons of folks here that are in your same shoes. :)

Too many here have tossed hard earned money on overpriced and mostly useless attornies. Do not feed the lawyers. It only keeps them strong causing them to breed out of control and further weakening us.

yes. I've heard over and over again stories like that. If your case is not complicated, I'd advise you to read all the guides and do it yourself.

You can do it by yourself. Just use all of the tools available here on VisaJourney and feel free to ask those in your portal if you have specific questions. Good luck with everything.

I advise hiring an immigration attorney, but not exclusively for the reasons you think you need one for. It serves a very important purpose at consulates, so I would deviate from the rest and advise starting off with one. But since, you're already into it, might as well continue solo.

Save your money. As others have mentioned, lawyers screw things up.

Take that saved money for a trip or 2 back to Peru
