That's harsh. Why are you so afraid of people who are different? You should embrace diversity, not run from it.

I have no problem at all with diversity. We are talking about the laws of a country here. When you live in any country you have to abide by their laws. You cannot have laws for some, and different laws for others. That will not serve the diverse cultures in the UK. I was by no means saying that others laws are verbal D, only that the constant push to change how the law is administered is.

Also the article seems to refer to "civil law", rather than criminal law. Noone is going to let someone off for "honor killing" anytime soon.

Of course as far as civil laws go - I'm guessing this would cover things like child custody disputes and division of property through divorce, though I do have to wonder what powers these courts would really have, ultimately - as the UK still has an established judicial structure (with appeal courts).

As has been stated, it's not about getting a different set of laws for criminal activity, just in areas where religion already plays a part in how laws are conducted. For example, did you know that in N.I, in deference to Catholic views on marriage it's impossible to get a divorce in less than 2 years?

Williams 'shocked' at Sharia row

The Archbishop of Canterbury is said to be overwhelmed by the "hostility of the response" after his call for parts of Sharia law to be recognised in the UK.

Friends of Dr Rowan Williams say he is in a state of shock and dismayed by the criticism from his own Church.

All the main political parties, secular groups and some senior Muslims have expressed dismay at his comments.

However, the Bishop of Hulme, the Rt Rev Stephen Lowe, criticised the "disgraceful" treatment of Dr Williams.
