EDWARDSVILLE — The beating death of a homeless man in October was triggered by a quarrel over a 24-ounce can of beer, a Madison County coroner’s jury was told Wednesday.

Thomas J. Muffler, 48, of Granite City was found dead in a driveway in the 2800 block of East 25th Street, Granite City, a few days after he was beaten by two young men, according to Granite City Detective Kenneth Wotjowicz.

The victim was actually beaten on Oct. 7 and did not want to go to an emergency room because he had no money and because he was afraid the hospital personnel would turn him in because he was wanted on warrants, acquaintances told police.

The beating over the can of beer was the third encounter of the night between the suspects and the victim, Wotjowicz said. The first time, he was beaten because he refused to buy beer for the young men. The first beating was outside a Granite City convenience store.

The second time, they had spotted him outside a residence and began throwing rocks and bricks at him. A resident of that address chased them off and was able to give a partial description.

The third time, the suspects took the beer from him outside that same convenience store and beat him once again.

Police tracked down two suspects by interviewing several people who were familiar with them or the victim.

Charged with first-degree murder and robbery in the case are Joseph Lee Raines, 17, of Granite City, and Brandon Carol Bouck, 18, of Granite City.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

I just gotta shake my head.....

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

the man who was killed was a psych patient at one time....and an alcholic..he could be surly, but was not into getting arrested for buying kids underage alcohol

where is the outrage from beer drinkers all over the world regarding this incident? clearly their silence must mean they condone such behavior. a similar incident in california resulted in a murderer serving only 3 years? clearly this society as a whole doesn't regard murder committed over beer as a very serious offense, and that it doesn't warrant much punishment.
