There's something weird about the flu shot.

Okay I am about to bring one of my weirdest paranoias public. I have a fear of the flu shot.

I have reason to believe there is something fishy going on:

1) Anyone I have spoken to tells me that after they get the shot they get sick. Isn't this supposed to stop the flu?

2) It's super cheap and made easily available to the very young and very old

3) You can't take it if you have certain allergies

I don't know who is standing to profit, and why the government is pushing it but to be perfectly honest I just think there is something weird about flu shots. I will one day get to the bottom of it, but for now I pose to you a question: WHY does everyone push it so hard? Who benefits and why/how?

No one in this world does something for nothing. Even those who do it out of the kindness of their heart usually feed on ego or knowing they are helping, which you could say is getting something in return.

Thoughts?

It's a secret conspiracy by George Bush and the the Chinese government to control the population of the US. The vaccine contains little "nanites" that go to your brain and receive radio transmissions from Chinese spy satellites to control your behavior.

You are certainly not alone. When my bro was in his second year of Medical School he got the flu shot and got the flu. He always felt that he got it from the shot, although it makes no sense. Most likely he was exposed to it at the hospital, since infection control procedures at hospitals SUCK BIG TIME. By the time he got the shot it was too late. My brother has gotten a few more flu shots and nothing happened so there you are. Is the flu as bad as the press makes it out to be? It is pretty common but look at the whole West Nile thing. What are the odds of getting West Nile Encephalitis in Canada? Only slightly more than getting malaria.

If your argument about altruism is correct, then it cannot exist since a reward will always be realized either in a spiritually (soteriology?), finanacially or notoriously. I'm no philosopher but it sounds a bit dystopian to me.

I swear it all in the mind! I have never gotten sick from the flu shot and I personally dont believe you do!! others that i know swear they do get sick from it, and usually do when they do get the shot. So i swear the mind just "wills" you to do what ya believe, lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Seriously though. The first time I had a flu shot I got sick. But that's because I was probably already exposed to the virus.

Someone I know died from the flu. It was severe that year. I got it and wanted to die myself. He was not a healthy person to begin with. The flu finished him off. The reason they promote the flu shot for the elderly, babies, and the infirm is because they're the most susceptible to suffering needless complications. It's a preventable illness which is a huge burden on the medical system. Like most (all?) immunizations, it is cultured in egg. If you are allergic to eggs, you should not take it.

Think of the flu as a computer virus; the shot is like a Norton anti-virus security program. The shot can protect you from the strains it's designed for, but there are always new strains being generated that you aren't protected for.

The flu can subtly mutate from one carrier to the next, rendering your flu shot obsolete and useless.

Also, vaccines can kick your immune system's #### while your body is generating its defenses against the flu as prompted by the shot.

Working in the health care field, I've got the flu shot for years and have never got the flu from the shot. Last year though I did have a patient with influenza A and a few days after I saw them, I did get the flu and I thought I was going to die! I got the flu in March so the shot I got in October had probably already run it's course. I am getting a booster shot this year. I never want to have that again. I think a lot of people "think" they have the flu, but it's not the real thing. Also, I see a lot of patients that seem to think that the flu shot is for the stomach flu, which it is not....it's for respiratory flu.

About the allergies. The flu has been made in a egg base (very little egg is in the shot) so those that are highly allergic to egg white probably shouldn't get it. We have though administered the flu shot in very tiny doses over a period of time to equal the full dose to those that are allergic to egg white and they have done fine.

Also....the flu shot is a dead virus......it won't make you sick.

I would never get a voluntary shot anyways. I let my body get itself immune naturally. But I know several that have gotten sick. Supposedly the flu shot is injecting a dead flu virus into your system so that you build up a resistence to it. I however think, that some of those aren't quite dead yet and actually are live virus's that infect you. I recall reading up on it a year or so ago, and can't remember what it said why people get sick.

Either way I very rarely ever get sick so I never worry about the flu. Had my first cold this year in the first time in 10 and haven't had the flu since I was a kid in the early 80's...

I'm just a wanderer in the desert winds...

I've had the flu shot for 2 years in a row - i've never gotten sick.. last year i got the flu the week BEFORE i got the flu shot (there was a shortage of the flu shot last year and they were late giving the shots on PEI).. the nurse said "looks like we were too late" then she stabbed me with the needle!!

I've taken it because my employer pays for it.. pure and simple.. I think employers pay for it in the hopes that they will have less people calling in sick. I know others who refuse to get it.. which is fine, but I guess I do it mostly because my Dr recommends it. I won't get it this year because my employer doesn't pay for that stuff... but I would take it again if it was offered to be free of charge (insert snicker here).. I wouldn't seek it out for myself if i had to pay for it.

There are always 2 sides to everything.

They are NOT injecting a live flu virus into you and hoping for the best :)

I personally have gotten one every year for about 7 - my old employer paid for it. The most common misconception as mentioned about is that people don't really know what flu is. It's respiratory, it's not when you're puking and have diarrhea (eww,...sorry folks).

The allergy thing I believe stems from what is in the shot. Something called Thimerosol...also in contact lense solution.

I liked the Norton Anti virus explanation above...they can only protect you against so many things. For me, it seems that even colds have been shorter and less intense when I get them...I'm happy for that.

If you don't like needles, obviously not for you..............what I really wish is that folks would just start doing the simple routine of thoroughly washing hands regularly in the work place. I worked in a building w/ close to 4000 people....you can bet that every door handle to a meeting room or bathroom I was in had been used by a huge number of people. I started washing my hands before I sat down for a snack at my desk or before eating lunch because my hands were going to be touching food going into me :) Really did help....yes, I flush the toilet with my foot too...lol

And that...is my rant for Weds

Hello Bradcannuck et al,

I am not a flu-shot-person.

If anyone asked me if I felt they should get one, I'd be a sure no.

What scares me are things like unsafe ingredients (mercury for one), unsubstantial evidence/proof that it actually helps, and since I have never gotten the flu, and some people I have spoken to didn't used to before having the vaccine. Also I have allergies to sulphides and the vaccine is incubated in eggs.

Here are a couple of informative (and some fun) things to watch and read (Google & YouTube rock!):

http://chemistry.about.com/cs/howthingswork/a/aa011604a.htm

http://altmedangel.com/vaccine.htm

I liked this quote from the link just below it. It reminds me how much influence corporate media has over people who pay attention to it and give it credence.

Only 36,000 Americans die from the flu infection each year, yet an average of 195,000 Americans have died each year from 2000 to 2002 due to potentially preventable, in-hospital medical errors. This means that “over five times as many people will die because they happen to be in the hospital and are unlucky enough to experience a preventable error, than will die from getting the flu, if the vaccine itself doesn’t put them in the hospital.â€

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles...-influenza.aspx

I have always thought myself to be a fit, healthy person who never gets the flu.

That is my reality! :D

Any more questions class? Hee hee.

I concur-the flu shot is killed viruses, you can't get sick from that.

If you've never had the flu, you can't understand what the big deal is. I'm relatively healthy, but am exposed to lots of people all the time (college students and patients in a hospital) so have been getting the flu shot for years. A few years ago (2004?) the strains that we were vaccinated against weren't actually the one that got bad (the way that they design the vaccine is to look at what strains of the flu are prevalent in Asia in the spring, then work like crazy making vaccines against those strains. Generally, they're pretty good at guessing which strains should be included in the vaccine but not perferct). Anyway, I got the full on actual flu. You know that you have the real flu and not just a cold because you no longer care if it's going to kill you, you want to die.

There will always be people who forget how bad a disease is because vaccines have controlled it's spread and will make up fantistic stories about how this really common medical proceeder must be causing some other disease. "Nearly all the kids with autism had the measles vaccine, the vaccine must have caused autism". The problem with this type of assertain is that nearly all little kids have the measles vaccine, it's just as valid to say that nearly all the kids with autism ride in cars, the cars must have caused autism. The same is true for people thinking that a killed vaccine causes the flu because they get a cold a few days/weeks later. A person looks for causality for a cold and instead of remembering all of the people that sneeze on him/her during the past week, they think of that shot that they had a week ago and decide that the shot must have caused the cold.
