Look at all the college kids who get fake Id's to go drinking at the bar. If someone was set on voter fraud through impersonation, do you really think a photo ID would stop them?

There are so many easier ways of committing fraud that we should be worried about, instead of infringing on a persons right to vote.

I think the problem isn't so much having people impersonating others to vote as people being registered to vote that aren't eligible in the first place.

Would it be so bad to require people to show proof of citizenship before registering to vote?

You don't need a photo Id to do that. Birth certificate, certificate of citizenship or naturalization would show that you are a citizen.

Infringing on Rights?? ####### It is neccesary to PROTECT persons Rights that they are awarded from those who defraud the Voting process by voting with out the legal right.

There is no infringing on rights it is a measure meant to protect those legally allowed to vote.

But we've established that's the problem, no? No one ever asked for any proof when i registered to vote!

If you start looking at Americans over 90 years old, particularly women, I think quite a few would not have birth certificates.

How do we know they're not illegal aliens?

I mean, of course they're not, but my point is - what the heck are we doing complaining about people being here illegally when we don't even know who *is* allowed to be here?

In Ca we are required to show either a State Issued Dl/ID card or US passport each time we vote. In Ca. one can not get a sate issued ID without proving legally residancy

i don't know of anyone without a photo id. maybe cause i don't hang out with the dregs of society?

Come to where I work. See if you can say that to the faces of some of the people here.

and? society has it's highs and lows. i avoid the lows because trouble follows them like seagulls do a garbage barge.

I've always been asked to show something, but it doesn't have to be a photo Id. You can vote with a utility bill if you like.

But then there are places non-citizens are allow to vote, primarily in local or state elections.

I think you have to ensure that everyone has reasonable access to these IDs, and we're not disenfranchising people who might not be able to afford a photo ID.

Almaty is right, IMO - it should be something decided by the States - seeing as the requirements for things like Driver Licenses, for example seem to vary by state.

I honestly hope this issue doesn't become a back door for a national ID card.

I don't know. I just feel like everyone's making a lot of excuses for the government not being able to run elections properly.

the states have the rights to determine the method used to register voters..time frames to register..places to register and mechanisms used to vote..it has always been that way..why change it? change the tools/mechanisms instead..so all is uniformed

Proof of citizenship does not prove you are eligable to vote. Many states don't allow felons to vote, for example.

It also doesn't prove where you live (a US citizen living in Florida can't vote in Georgia for example).

Putting a picture on a voter registration card might solve the problem - but most states don't require the card to vote anyway.

That is exactly why there has to be laws requiring valid photo id to vote in any state or gvot. election and if it menas a Voter iD then so be it, there has to be mesures to protect the voting process.
