Why are we all doing fiance visas as opposed to marriage visas? Please let me know..

i did it because my whole family is here.. we did a nice engagement ceremony there...

When I went to the embassy during a visit, I spoke to the senior CO, since they denied our relationship and she said well if this is a real relationship.. just get married. .and i told her.. yes but I want my whole family there and all my bros and sisters and uncles and cousins are in the US or Canada.. and it is easier to get married there.. and that we agreed to do an engagement ceremony here for some of her family and the rest of her family lives in US and Canada as well.. she then said oh ok...

Wondering why everyone else is doing a fiance visa?

We're doing the fiancee visa because for us it's the faster and less expensive route. Russia makes it tough for a foreigner to marry in country, and it would have required another trip on my part. Also K-3 visas were taking a lot longer than K-1's back when I applied. I think they're still taking on average a month or so longer.

We will most likely return to Russia after we're married and do something for her family.

There were two factors why we eventually decided to the K1-route.

1. We didn't want to get married and then be apart going through the K3 process. Getting married in the US while I'm there under the VWP program was not an option for us either since we believe in doing things the legal way.

2. My fiance has his own business and stronger family/social ties compared to me. That's why it was clear for us that we would live in the US rather than him packing up and live in some other country (i've been relocating lots due to my job over the past years, so I never really settled anywhere).

In every difficulty lies an island of opportunity.

We did the fiance visa because we didn't really know what else there was out there. We weren't married so it seemed to be the logical choice for us. We've had to consider other options based on our early naivety but yeah - in short it was the only one we knew anything about, it was supposed to take 6-7 months to complete the whole process when we filed and the K3 is supposed to take a year or so (at least back in July).

We didn't want to get married and then be separated. Plus Mark's family are more religious than mine - so it's more important for them to attend a formal wedding than it is for my family (and I've been married before). Mark's family all live near each other and they are very close. He also has both sets of grandparents still, whereas mine died some years ago... all of which has also been a large factor in our deciding to live in Kansas rather than him moving to live here with me.

If we got refused for some reason (or the process got horribly delayed again) we'd probably get married here and then visit back and forth while exploring other options but it's not ideal and we'd only consider that because we want to start trying for a baby sometime in the next two years and neither of us wants to have a child outside of marriage.

Settling into married life

Waiting on the EAD, AP, and AOS
