UK electrical appliances in the US

I have a number of pretty nice kitchen appliances here in the UK (and some in Aus, for that matter), and was wondering about taking them with me... now, obviously I know the wall plugs are different, and so's the voltage (right word?), but my fiancé has some idea in his head that he can adapt them reasonably ok (his work involves electrical stuff, so he could do it safely, though he hasn't done anything like this before)

has anyone else taken electrical stuff with them, and if so, how did you adapt them? just buy a stack of adaptors (which is how I run a couple of Aus things here in the UK) or actually cut the old plugs off, or whatever? anyone encountered problems doing it?

by the way, this would all be small stuff - kettle, hair dryer, lamps etc - not white goods ;)

many thanks in advance for any help :)

The Very Secret Diary of Legolas Son of Weenus - by Cassandra Claire

Day One: Went to Council of Elrond. Was prettiest person there. Agreed to follow some tiny little man to Mordor to throw ring into volcano. Very important mission - gold ring so tacky.

Day Six: Far too dark in Mines of Moria to brush hair properly. Am very afraid I am developing a tangle.

Orcs so silly.

Still the prettiest.

Day 35: Boromir dead. Very messy death, most unnecessary. Did get kissed by Aragorn as he expired. Does a guy have to get shot full of arrows around here to get any action? Boromir definitely not prettier than me. Cannot understand it. Am feeling a pout coming on.

Frodo off to Mordor with Sam. Tiny little men caring about each other, rather cute really.

Am quite sure Gimli fancies me. So unfair. He is waist height, so can see advantages there, but chunky braids and big helmet most off-putting. Foresee dark times ahead, very dark times.

When I came from the UK, I took my hair irons and hair dryer with me. They were expensive in the UK so I didn't want to just leave them behind. Because of the voltage difference, they both lacked power over here, and the irons especially were practically useless. I'm not sure about small electrical kitchen goods, but I'm guessing you might have the same problem. They may not do what they are supposed to do due to the lack of appropriate power.

We have our stereo from England - we bought one of these for about $30 and an electronics store which works fine

We use the plug adaptors

I have never had luck using hair dryer long term with a converter, however

Considering the cost of shipping your items over and the cost of power inverters... Why? Small appliances are VERY cheap in the US. I can't imagine that it would in any way be worth it.

It just died! Although that seems to happen to Boots brand hair dryers pretty quickly without putting then through a converter.

I have a couple of electrical items I'm taking over and got a couple of these.

They will work up to 45W. My lamp and my GHD's should work as they are under 45W.

I also got a couple of plain adaptors as I have a couple of things that are 110-240V

I brought my kettle.... It wont boil, gets warm but not much else..... Toaster dont toast.... just warms the bread... food processor only works slow so not any use for mixing stuff.... My hairdryer runs so slow that it would take forever to dry my hair...

I would say dont bother bringing anything over that does not have dual voltage ie. 110/220...

thanks, Kezzie and rkl57; that's very helpful :)

All righty then.

After all, it's your 10 grand. Not mine.

yes :)

I'm going to spend ten grand on bringing a kettle and a hair dryer to the US :)

What you need to do depends on the individual item. You need to look at the packaging of the appliance or possibly the info is somewhere on the appliance itself. If it says 110v-240v for example, then all you need is something to convert the plug itself. If the appliance says something like 220-240v then you need a voltage step up converter, like the one linked to by rkl57.

sorry, kezzie got that in just before me!
