We have found that the vast majority of inquiries we receive are readily answered by information available in this website. However, if you wish to contact us, all inquiries must be sent by e-mail only.

Please do not send your e-mail inquiry more than once, as duplicate inquiries will delay our response time. We make every effort to respond within three working days.

If your inquiry concerns a visa that was not yet assigned a RDJ case number, you should first contact the NVC (National Visa Center), through the public inquiry form.

About 21 after Documentarily Qualified (DQ) we got the interview date for a little over a month away. (May 23rd -> July 7th)

Scheduling process step-by-step:

1- Fill out the DS-160 . A completed DS-160 is required for every applicant.

2- Register at the scheduling site. You will need your case number that was provided to you by the National Visa Center (NVC)- this is a 10-digit number that will most likely begin with “RDJ.” Make sure you are in the “Immigrant Visa” section of the website and select the option that states: “I HAVE RECEIVED A LETTER FROM THE CONSULAR SECTION WITH INSTRUCTIONS TO REGISTER OR SCHEDULE A K VISA APPOINTMENT.”

3- Choose your preferred delivery option for receiving the visa if your application is approved and enter your address if you choose home delivery. If you wish, you may choose to pick up your visa at one of the Applicant Service Centers (ASC/CASV).

4- Pay the required fee. Every applicant is required to pay the fee.

5- Schedule an appointment for your interview at the United States Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro and an appointment to provide your fingerprints and photograph at one of the ASC offices prior to your interview at the Consulate.

6- Print your confirmation page and bring it to the Consulate General on the day of your immigrant visa interview.

All K visa applicants, regardless of age or gender, must have a medical examination with one of our authorized panel physicians before their interview at the Consulate General. We recommend you schedule your medical exam at least one week prior to your interview date. A list of the panel physicians and additional instructions are available here.

Please note that you must complete the procedures described above for each dependent in your case. For example, if you are applying with your two children, you will need to follow these steps three separate times--one time for each person applying.

Vaccination requirements? The doctor will instruct the beneficiary as to which vaccines to take based on their medical history and age. Please note for K1 you are not required to take vaccines before entering the US. You have the option to take them leading up to the Adjustment of Status after married. However, vaccines in Brazil are more than likely cheaper than in the US.

HELPFUL TIP: Gather all your vaccination records in advance and take it with you to the medical interview, so it'll save you time and money, it's faster for the doctor to figure out which one you need or not.
Go to a "Posto de Saude" near you and ask them to update your vaccination book. Most of the vaccines required are offered for free by SUS.

USUALLY, the vaccines required are the ones as follows - DO NOT rely only on this! Always ask your doctor for a complete and updated list:

DTP, or DTaP, or DT - children between 2-6 years old

Td or dTap - starting at the age of 7.

OPV ou IPV - between 2 months and 17 years of age.

MMR - between 1-64 years old.

Hib (Haemophilus Influenza B) - between 2-59 months old.

Hepatitis A - between 12-23 months old.

Hepatitis B - between 1 day and 18 years old.

Meningitis C - between 11 months and 18 years old.

Varicella (chickenpox) - starting at 12 months. If you've already had it, there is no need to take the vacine.

Pneumococcal Conjugate (PCV) - between 2-59 months old.

Pneumococica Polysaccharide (PPSV) - over 65 years old.

Influenza (flu-shot) of the current years - 6 months and over.

COVID shot
Cheap and good hotels near the Consulate? July 2019: Not the cheapest but we stayed at Praia Ipanema Hotel and had a great experience. We walked to the building where the Labs / X Rays and Medical Exam occurred (Rio). Ipanema beach and where the medical offices are located in Rio are very safe. No concerns of safety. Uber used through out our trip was also a good experience and we never felt at risk.

Feb. 2019: Selina Lapa Hostel: Bed in shared room for R$ 40 (U$10). Really good hostel, 3/4 blocks from the consulate, less than 10 minutes walk.

Dec. 2015 - Hotel Vitoria around R$100/night (USD$28/night) for single room through booking.com. Located right beside the Catete Subway station (about 8 minutes Metro ride to Cinelandia, then a couple of minute walk to the Consulate). Historic building, with clean freshly renovated rooms.

Novotel Rio de Janeiro Santos Dumont - within 9 minutes (700m) from both the Embassy and the SDU Airport. Around U$ 68.00/night.

They will hold your bags in a secure room for you if you want to check out before your interview.

Ibis Budget Centro (former Formula 1) - within 17 minutes (1,2km) from the Embassy, and 2km from the SDU Airport. Around US 65.00/night.

Hotel Ok - within 3 minutes (280m) from the Embassy, and 15 minutes (1km) from the SDU Airport. Around U$ 54.00/night.

Aeroporto Othon Hotel - within 7 minutes (550m) from the Embassy, and 11 minutes (800m) from the SDU Airport). Around U$ 60.00/night

Hotel Atlantico Business Centro - within 5 minutes (300m) from the Embassy, and 15 minutes (1,1km) from the SDU Airport.

You can also stay at any hostel throughout the city. Always visit websites like booking.com, once it tells you a lot about hotels and distances.

Updated in 09/22/15 - some posts were removed because the hotels changed names or don't accept bookings at the time (may be closed or something). Others were edited because it didn't correspond to the reality anymore concerning prices.

Additional Info? Please note that If your interview happens after September 1st 2018, you are required to visit one of the ASCs to collect your biometrics and photo before the interview in the consulate. This step will appear while you are registering/scheduling the interview using the link included in the Consulate's email when your case is ready for interview.

The US Petitioner may join the Beneficiary for the interview. The questions are usually directed to the Beneficiary, not the Petitioner.

Laptops, cell phones and cameras are not allowed at the US General Consulate. There are some companies that specialize in keeping electronics just outside the building, but the preferable thing to do is not to take it at all.

GENERAL INFORMATION - According to information gotten from the consulate:

- Copy of the USC's birth certificate or passport is enough. There's no need to have the original;
- Even though the form used is the I-864 for CR-1 / IR-1 or I-134 for K-1, the petitioner has to be *125%* above the poverty guidelines, and not 100%;
- AOS and supporting documents discussed here: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=31660 ;
- Copies of e-filed tax returns are okay (if you have them, you don't need to get transcripts);
- The medical and the I-864/I-134 (and supporting documents) are good for 1 year;
- The police certificates are also good for year (even if the certificates bring another expiration date);
- There's no need to bring copies of I-129F, G-325As; also no need to bring NOA1, NOA2 or any RFE received - although some people take it just to be safe.;
- Federal Police website: http://www.dpf.gov.br/servicos/antecedentes-criminais
- List of all Brazilian Civil Police's websites: http://portuguese.brazil.usembassy.gov/pt/ssplist.html

For the medical exam: The Beneficiary needs to have already scheduled the interview in order to attend the medical appointment.

Useful info also to be found here (in Portuguese): http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=27856

The Beneficiary can get some of the vaccine shots required for free at "Postos de Saude". Most of the information on where they are located can be found at the Beneficiary's "Secretaria de Saude" website.

The interview fee is US$ 265.00 MRV fee (K1/K2/K3/K4 visas)
Payment for MRV must be done through the Applicant Service Center (ASC): https://ais.usvisa-info.com/
I-130, I-600 or I-800 petition fee: US$325.00

****Note about DCF on Visto Temporario V****
