Quick Reference Guide for State-Level Services

In reading a lot of threads, I noticed that there were a lot of questions that are related to state services. Since each state handles things like driver's licenses, certifications, etc. differently, one needs to check out their specific state to get the relevant info.

To assist with that, I've put together a spreadsheet listing information for the 50 states plus DC: http://bit.ly/IbtIHE

For now, I've only included links to the following: the state government site, info on driver's license/state identification, teacher certification, state bar association, and lists of the colleges and universities in each state. If there's other info that folks feel would be helpful to know -- at the state level -- feel free to make a suggestion and I'll do what I can.

Couldn't one just use a search engine? Like google?

Perhaps, but depending on what you're seeking, it may not be the correct link to follow or include the correct information. For example, there's a dmv.com site that purports itself to be representing the various DMV laws across the U.S., but it's not the official state site.

No one has to use the spreadsheet I compiled. I just wanted to make it easier to find the things most ask about when they're going through the next steps in the process. YMMV.

Only government websites can legally have a ".gov" suffix.

Official government websites generally have this suffix.

So if a link is ".com"(ie: commercial) obviously do not go there.

For example, in Florida, gathergoget.com is the state-owned site for learning information on how to obtain a driver's license/state ID.

I don't know. I've lived all over the US and never had any sort of difficulty finding a DMV site, etc.

Just my two cents. Cheers though.

Good on you. Many people can get through the immigration process on their own, but then there are those who found VJ to help make it a bit easier to understand. *shrugs* I just offered something to those who are be new to the U.S. and would like an at-a-glance view of what's available in their new home country because each state (and DC) does things differently and is a different ballgame from their federal-level encounters. Again, YMMV.

I agree. For IL the correct website is http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/

While it is true people can use Google as Daniel suggested, having this spreadsheet available for immigrants that just moved to the U.S. can be of great help. Great job LeftCoastLady.
