Why did you decide to make the move to the USA and not the other way?

He has kids. His salary over here won't be able to pay their study. The regulation in Indonesia about foreigner couple is hard as well. All about money. Sggghhh ....

It all boils down to financial reasons for us. We talked a lot about where we would live and listed the benifits and disadvantages of each place. Unfortunately working in China as more than an English teacher is difficult for a foreigner unless you get hired by a multinational company that will place you in China. In our case, however, we both agree that raising a family in China is not the best thing. The US is still better for this, but we have also talked quite a bit about other countries where we might live. But as with everything, money is the key. Here in the US I can support us oth on my salary. She can also work soon after arriving.

People are responding why they decided to move to the USA as kids, but I wonder if there are any out there where BOTH sides have kids, and they arent older. I wonder how they decided.

We decided the US because my parents were more willing to support us until we are on our feet. So money again. But not only that, we actually would love to live in Europe in the long run, maybe not England but somewhere in Europe, undecided at the minute, and we didn't want to have to worry about immigration our whole life, so here first for citizenship and then we have free choice to come/go when we please without the worry.

Not only that, but we'd love to be done with immigration, both have US/UK dual citizenship, before we settle down and have kids, as time is on our side since we're both young. We're only 1 year away from my husband applying for US citizenship. Now in the beginning this was our plan, but now that we're settled here, and looking into buying a house at the end of the year and having our own business, I don't believe We'll leave the US as soon as we first thought. My husband is finally adjusted and has his own life and friends here, he finally calls the US his home.

I am much more established in the US than he was in the UK because I own a home, 2 vehicles, etc. My total costs for my mortgage and utilities were the same as him renting a bedroom. I had a 7 year old son at the time and we didn't want to uproot him. We can survive on just one salary here - we did fine on mine and then he got his job that pays twice when mine does. I can finish my degree here. We can afford to have as many children as we want here. Health care and dental is better here according to him (just more expensive). He makes 50% more here than he did at his last job over there. I can't stand the rain.

I moved here because we both felt that I was more adaptable than my wife. In England we are immersed in US culture through TV, Movies, Music, Sports etc so it was never going to be as big a culture shock as her moving to England (She has travelled extensively including to England). The other side was the weather, although the extremes of the north east here can get to you...especially in the winter. Its just that england can be so grey. The plan was to finish the process here and move to England so we both have dual citizenship...its actually really easy once we have been married for 4 years to go to England. However our careers have progressed and its becoming harder and harder to envisage a day when we ever leave the US. Its home, its where we are building alife together.

The financial; support requirement exists going to the UK too and I couldn't financially sponsor him like he could me going to the USA.

He liked his job and also loves where he lives and didn't want to move. I on the other hand was in a job I intended to quit, and always expected to move away to London or even to another country (although America never crossed my mind to be honest) if I could find a job in the fashion industry which was my training. So emotionally I was already set up for the possibility of emigrating for other reasons just wasn't prepared to move this far away.......So finances and also I was more open to moving than him so it was the more logical option for me to move than him.

This is similar to our reasoning as well. Neither of us had kids so that wasn't a concern. Overall we both feel the cost of living is way better here than in England (well, unless you live in New York or LA or something), and just the lifestyle here suited him better. He has no desire to ever move back, but we both like the fact that our daughter will be able to live there one day if she chooses.

Yes! If it rained less in Scotland I am sure we'd have more immigrants

We decided to move here, for now, because my husband got a job here. And he missed the States. He'd lived in Scotland for 3 years and unfortunately, unless they get rid of the Monarchy he'll never ever swear allegiance to any Queen or King and become a British citizen.

Now if Scotland becomes independent...that might change things!

I moved to the UK to be with him (was there for 3 years) and financially - we can do SO much better in the US (OC, California).

We both have decent, salaried jobs but London is far too expensive. We'd never be able to save to buy a house / flat in Central London, and wouldn't want to move out in to the suburbs.

And the weather.

She has a daughter whose father is very much in his daughters life (and him and I get on rather well). Also, I was a bit of a bum in the UK, I had a good job, and nothing to show for it, I rented a house from my Gibraltarian friend and the only thing I had was a nice car. She has some real estate over here and was much more tied down that way than I was. It just made more sense because of her daughter and financially for me to make the move, however we did talk it over for a long time.

The question is probably meant more for "US vs. UK" than for the US vs. other countries, si man, but I would not leave the U.S. Why? Behold the opening words of our national anthem:

We talked about that at length and decided it was best for the time being that he come here. I have children from a previous marriage and i couldnt take them with me nor would i want to deprive my ex of having them if i was able to take them.

I also have diabetes and some other medical conditions that require medical help and prescriptions that right now we didnt want to take any chances on medical care as well.

Our plans however looking into the future...after the childen are older we may very well move back and live. I easily adapted into the culture and the family. So if I had no children or no medical issues I would easily have gone to live with him.
