US Consulate in Guayaquil, Ecuador

Hello Everyone! I just had my medical in Guayaquil, and I thought I'd detail how it went, in case anyone ever wonders.

I called in to make my appointment as soon as we confirmed that our case and documents had arrived at the local consulate. I called the consulate and spoke to a lady, who asked me for my case number, and after a brief wait told me that everything was in order and that i could come to the interview as planned. Immediately after that I called the doctor's office, and asked them what was the next available date i could come for the medical. The secretary said I should come on Thursday (2 days later).

I was told to come from 7:30 to 9:30 am, and to bring the following:

1) Passport

2) Color copy of the Biographical Page of my passport

3) My case # confirmation (I brought the email sent to me by the consulate, but i saw other people had the confirmation page from the DS-260)

4) 6 photos carnet size

The fee was $140 (if you are going to need vaccines it's another $40, but they don't give those to K-1's)

We arrived at 7:30, and there was already about 20 people in there. You have to take a ticket, and wait until they call yours. They give you a form to fill out.

1) Name

2) Current Address (in Ecuador) - Street, City, Province, Zip code

3) Address in the US (where you will live) - Street, City, State, Zip code

4) Questions about allergies, vaccination allergies, egg allergies

5) Last menstruation

6) Are you pregnant?

7) Have you ever had another medical for immigration purposes?

8) Type of Visa

9) Have you had Chicken Pox?

10) phone numbers and email address

Once you fill that out, you wait for your turn. I was #19. When the secretary called it, she asked me for my pictures, passport copy, passport, the form i just filled out and the case number confirmation. Since i didn't have an official invitation yet, or the DS-260 confirmation page like most people there, she first checked the "database" (an excel spreadsheet sent by the consulate) and when she didn't find me in it she checked the most recent one in their email. Apparently the consulate updates the lists every couple of days, and I had just made my interview appointment 2 days ago, so probably i wasn't on the spreadsheet yet.

The secretary told me to wait until 8 am so she could call the consulate directly and inquire about my case. In 15 min she called again, and confirmed that my case was in the consulate database.

She gave me 2 forms to fill out and another form to give at the Clinica Panamericana where i had to do my x-rays. One form is to give to the lady when you pay the fee, and with the other form you confirm that you are not pregnant. After paying the fee, the secretary sends you to the first floor (take the lift, not the stairs) to get your blood taken (you give her the color copy of your passport with the ticket you took attached to it).

Next you go to the Clinica Panamericana (Panamá 616 y Roca). The secretary will ask you for your cedula and the form with your picture attached to it that they gave you at the doctor's office. I didn't wait more than 5 minutes, and the x-ray taking itself took another 5 min. Then you go back to the doctor's office, and talk to the other secretary.

She fills out your personal information forms (i believe this will be a part of the medical package) and confirms the spelling of your name, D.O.B, etc. She gave a receipt, and told me to wait for the doctor to call me.

The doctor first asks you questions about your health (Have you ever had TB, chicken pox, mumps, drug use, operations, mental health, STD's, tattoos, kidney and liver problems, heart conditions, cancer) and then gives you a general checkup (height and weight, blood pressure, bladder, stomach, lungs, quick eyesight exam) and that's it!

I was home by 10:30 AM.

Thanks for all the good info, jane! Like you mentioned about the ds160, I recommend scheduling a medical only after receiving the ds160 confirmation. They said they required it for Santy for that purpose (easily finding you in the database). Much easier, and it doesn't cost you extra time just to wait until you've made an appt.

Also- you'll need another medical in the US for AOS, so they might not give you any vaccines there if you need them (we tried to get them for Santy there because it can be cheaper, but they said they have to recheck here anyways). Once you get married, you have another medical done, and you get vaccines there that the USCIS approved doctor tells you they need. Our dr specifically said he thought Ecuador's vaccine records (or maybe just quito's) were pretty good! Easy to read and almost all up to date. So that's a plus!

Caveat: You might not need a full medical examination from the civil surgeon in the U.S. -- see threads about the DS-3025 and I-693.

Thank you guys! As i've mentioned to Santy and Allie before in PM's, my medical and vaccination records are a) old and nearly illegible (to me) and b) in russian. I think we're going to try having them translated in the US, because my mom claims "i have all the vaccines because i'm such a healthy child!!!" (add russian accent for effect)

A little update since I can't edit my previous post about the medical:

I was told to pick the results up at 3:30 pm. (I went at 4:30, barely made it, they were already closing :S ) The secretary gave me my super envelope and a cd with my x-rays. She said I should only bring the envelope with the results to the interview and under no circumstances to DETACH THE INFORMATION PAPER STAPLED ONTO THE ENVELOPE, OTHERWISE THE ENTIRE THING WILL BE INVALID. So, yeah, don't do that. Oh, she also said to bring the x-rays CD with me in my carry-on once I go to the US, because the IO might ask for it.

And that's that!

Not what the UIO doc said. He refused to give vaccs, and Santy couldn't get them anywhere else (besides that he didn't know which). Said they wouldn't know which ones he needed until he had an exam here. My lawyer had given us a list, but they told us to have the medical done here for AOS. I don't know why he wouldn't need a medical here since it's separate from the k1.

Anyways, the doctor didn't give him that form for the AOS. The consulate took his medical form. Hence them saying he needed a medical done here. So he had it done here, and they gave him two vaccines that he didn't have. We tried to avoid going to the civil surgeon because of money, but they told us we needed to. If you can do it like that, then the consulate and the doctor in Ecuador both did it wrong. Wouldn't surprise me, but either way the dr didn't tell us that, nor would he tell us which vaccines he needed!

Also, the civil surgeon said the one test the Ecuadorian doctor did wasn't enough for the form. I think it was the chest one for TB. The civil surgeon gave him a skin test instead. So I don't know if I trust only having a medical done in Ecuador regardless, lol.

Then apparently so does the GYE consulate and other doctors in the UIO area! Lol. They all said te same since someone here mentioned we could get our remaining vaccines there. No one would let us. I'm honestly glad we had him checked here, though. It wasn't a big deal to have him checked here, and we would've had no idea which vaccines to get him in Ecuador.

Ah -- maybe the official doc couldn't or wouldn't give them, but you were free to get them from some other doc or clinic... assuming that you knew the ones needed.

I just said other doctors, too! Lol. We tried to ask other doctors. They all said the same. Besides, we didn't know which were needed. We had the USCIS list, but when we had them done here, it was different. We didn't need all of them. So I wouldn't trust having them done there.

btw, Guayaquil just updated their PK4 for K1, and now it list required vaccinations (go to the last page). That's the only difference between the May and August versions
