I have to admit, ever since I joined this forum, I have been looking forward to the day when I can write one of these! :-)
Some of you will have noticed that we had a bit of a shorter lead time, due to the fact that we expedited the USCIS portion on medical grounds. We also figured we may as well see if we could do the same for the interview too...so we emailed them stating that the USCIS part had been expedited and provided all the documentation and asked if they would consider doing the same for the interview. To our surprise, they did! So on Tuesday morning we received a response from the Embassy informing us that the interview was in 4 days time! This was swiftly followed by me working myself into a panic on Tuesday night as I stressed about whether or not we had all the evidence for the I-134. More on this shortly...
So...interview day. I live about an hour from London and my appointment was at 8.30am. I woke up at 5am to speak to my fiancé on Skype for a bit before hauling ass to the big smoke that is our nations capital, grabbing my customary mocha on the way! It was FREEZING so I welcomed the warmth! I got there at around 7.50, dropped my stuff in at Goulds (very nice, thank you) and joined the first queue where I was greeted with news I didn't want to hear...this is probably a good time to mention that because the interview was rushed forward, I never received the appointment letter. Only a print of the email confirmation. So I walk to the first checkpoint where I was asked to produce the letter, the receipt and my passport.
"Sorry, I dont have you down for an appointment today"...
Erm...a brief and minor heart failure ensued until I managed to come to my senses and highlight the appointment date on the email. She double checked with someone...
"Oh silly me...I'm looking at the wrong list." ...(!!!!!!!!!!!)...I politely asked her never to do that again. She smiled and signed it off and sent me through to queue two. I was then called forward by a guy who checks my passport and letter (again, he had to go and double check my email print out which made me even more nervous) but quickly sent me through to the final queue which is for the security check point. Remember at this point, you are still outside in the cold, looking up at the big gold eagle on top of Castle Greyskull...I mean the US Embassy. You get called into the small scan room four people at a time and its just like an airport. No worries.
So I finally make it inside where I check in (a ticket is stuck to your appointment letter) and get cosy in the waiting room. As many other reviewers have pointed out, the N numbers (non-immigrant) come thick and fast with only a couple of I numbers being processed at any one time. Its a lot like waiting in Argos for that shelving unit you just bought! (Brits will get that!) I was I905. When I got there, I900 and I901 were being processed. I waited about 45 mins before being called to the next window. Anyone planning on reading a book, good luck! Your head glances at the screen every time a number is called!
Finally, I905 was called and I made my way to window 13. Windows 1-11 are in the main waiting area whilst the others are down a corridor next to window 11, past the bathrooms, photo machine and cashier.
He asked for my passport and my letter which had been given its number/barcode when I checked in. He advised me to not book any flights until I had my passport because "sometimes the system gets a bit glitchy and it might take longer". Brilliant. He went away and got my file...use this time to get your papers organised for when he gets back...he came back and took my fee receipt, scanned my fingerprints and took my police cert, birth cert (both with copies) and the I-134 and evidence. Now, earlier I mentioned that I got myself into a panic over what evidence I had which was a 2009 tax return, 2010 W2, 3 months of payslips and an employment status form from her company which shows,amongst other things, when she started. My advice... don't panic! I did and I nearly made myself ill over it. These guys don't want your blood, they just want to double check that all is good and that you are who you say you are (my finance's wise words on Tuesday night. She was totally right). If your fiancés/co-sponsors salary is on the border of the poverty line, then yeah, maybe be a bit more prepared and bring more evidence. But other than that, you don't need endless months of pay stubs or years of tax returns. So relax...it all gets thrown into a folder and he gives you the pink slip, the chest x-ray and sends you on your way.
I got some water and a dark chocolate Kit Kat (breakfast!) and sat down to complete the pink form...maybe 5-10 mins, later I was called back up for the real deal.
An American guy greeted me at window 16 and he was talking to the guy who had served me before. Automatically I assumed there was something wrong with my file but there wasn't. He asked me to sign the oath (didn't have to raise my hand or anything) and asked how we had met...very informal. Myself and my fiancé both work for very well known musical instrument companies and he proceeded to tell me how Tom Jones's band (of all people) were in there just two days prior sorting out their visa's...I laughed...he laughed...we all had a good time. He then said "well everything looks great. Your visa is approved" at which point it felt like the biggest weight had been lifted from my broad but tired shoulders.
An hour and a half and a quick "how did you guys meet" is all it took and I quickly found myself in the queue to pay for my passport return. Paid it...got the hell out to get my phone from Goulds and call my amazing fiancé who was as speechless as I was that I was out before 10am. K-1 Visa...Done!
And that is my story. Fairly painless and the moral of which is not to panic. Visa journey is an amazing resource with some great people who have helped along the way (Nich-Nick, Gap 1, Ameribrit, thank you!) but it is so easy to get confused and to see conflicting info, so make sure it isn't your only resource. Nich-Nick has an amazing online document for all you K-1er's and you can link it from his signature. At least I assume its a he. Could be a she... :-) Also, London is a bit different in as much as you dont need a duplicate copy of the USCIS pack and more evidence of ongoing relationships. Just what they tell you to bring.
