Consulate Review: Montreal, Canada
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : March 30, 2010
Embassy Review : We left the hotel around 6:10 got to the consulate at 6:20 ish. A few ppl showed up shortly thereafter. One of the vjers we met was stef loves bran. Was a wee bit cold -10. The hotel was soo close like not even 5 mins to walk.

They opened the doors around 7:30ish, i had no watch or anyway to tell the time until we got upstairs. Someone didn't put the letters back so they had to hand scribble the letters on pieces of scrap paper..lol. I joked about how it looked like a Monday and the guards kinda laughed and joked back. They were nice and friendly. Went through security then downstairs to the elevator.

Guard came shortly after to take a-e up. Once upstairs we were told to sit on one side of the room. I figured at least 3 ppl in that elevator were vj'ers..as we were the only ones facing the right way LOL. It was 8am at this point. A few minutes later we got called to window 11, David was given a paper to go pay the 131$usd, and come back. The lady at window 11 was super nice.

She asked me for passport and copy, birth certificate and copy, medical, police cert, letter of intent, i 134 and evidence. Pictures, and envelope. I went to give her the pic from the online ds-160 form and she said she didn't need it even though i did the form without uploading it. She asked me to make sure my info was still correct, all i had to change was phone number. David gave her the receipt from paying the fee.

Went and sat down for another maybe 10 mins. She called me back up, did the fingerprinting, went and sat down again. Was maybe 8:30 by this time. Around 15 mins later we were called to room 8 to see the co.

He had us swear to tell the truth, asked how we met, when we met in person, when we decided to get married, who proposed to who, where david worked and what he did. If he had any siblings etc. Asked if i had any issues with police, or border, to which i replied about my border refusal in 2008. explained why i was turned around and how scary it was being fingerprinted, photographed etc. he apologized and said thats not how they purposely treat their CDN neighbours, but that the cbp do have a job to do to which i said i understand this etc. and if i knew then what i know now..well Asked if we had gone back and forth to visit each other and when my last trip was.

Then he took my fingerprint, and said Congratulations, and handed me the K1 FAQ letter. I clapped my hands did a little jump in the air and said "yay!" along with ty ty ty He said the visa would be mailed out WED and hopefully since i had the priority next am envelope i might get it thursday, if not Monday.

all in all it took an hour and we were out of there by 9am. and finished eating breakfast by 20 after at the hotel

We were literally with the CO about a grand total of 5-10 mins if that long even! I know ppl have said this before but until you go through it..you really do not realize how simple easy fast and painless the actual interview is..

Thank you so much for all your help. I really could not have stayed sane. 381 days and i finally have my k1 approval. soon as i get my passport, i'm leaving the same day for Chicago, and will post my poe review then. As for right now. I'm going to go snuggle next to my sleeping exhausted fiance who drove from chicago to montreal for me.

POE Review: CDN-USA Border
Event Description
Entry Date : 2010-04-06
Embassy Review : Ambassador bridge windsor / detroit

David and i got to the bridge around 5:15pm or so. the man in the booth was very nice, and old fellow, and i explained i was to process my k1 visa today. he took the passports, swiped them, asked if i had my sealed consulate package, and did a bit of typing on the pc. he then asked me if i knew the rules and asked me what not to do once i cross..to which i said. i can't work..he said i was wrong..and that i could work as soon as i crossed..erm..not as a k1 i cant but i did not argue with him. then he asked me the same question again, to which i replied i cannot leave the us until i get my ap. that was the correct answer he was looking for.

so we head over to secondary, two guys are waiting for us and are like ..whats all this stuff in your car..to which i replied, personal effects, i'm activating my k1..they look at me puzzled..and i said..k1 visa approved i'm moving to the usa..then they realize i'm there for processing and send us in.

a k1 visa with 5 kids was being processed as we got in, and a few ppl lined up. the girl processing the k1/k2 was having computer issues. a few cbp were arguing with a woman trying to import her 3rd car. about 15 mins or so go by and ppl leave, the k1/k2 is still being processed, and the rest of the ppl are just sitting at their terminals.

at 5:45 one of the officers says oh i see you have that big yellow envelope..ya i'm leaving in 5 mins i can't help you. to which i sigh and continue waiting. i guess we arrived during a shift change as i heard ppl complainging about overtime and some trainees.

finally at 6pm someone says ill be served shortly as the person to do the k1 is not there..ok so wait some more. finally around 6:15 an older man sits down and helps me out right away. he seemed to know what he was doing. asked if i knew the rules and what to do after i marry, i recited aos form numbers etc etc..he seemed happy, i think i shaved 2o mins of explanation off his timetable LOL.

he gives me my passport with the i94 in it and i realize my name is misspelt. not such a simple thing to fix. he had to get a supervisor and that took about another 15 mins to fix, then he started having computer issues. finally at 7pm i was not done being processed yet and he was sposed to be done and gone for supper. so i get handed over to another guy, to have the final stuff done, get my new i94 passport and that stamped. i double check it all, and ask if i can get a copy of my medical, and was told they dont give out anything from the package or make copies.

finally got out of there around 7:20 about. most of it was waiting, or computer issues, or other stuff, overall seemed easy enough. i just made sure passport was stamped, and i 94 was all good paid the 6$ and was starving and wanted food.

i did not get asked to sign anything, thought i would have to, and also they asked for davids address, and his id card has the old one on it..well it's current but not where we will be living as of next week. Not sure if that will be an issue, his parents will still be living at the old address til end of may so we get mail at both address's. i just thought it was weird as all the address info is in the pile of papers they have.

i'm just worried my medical will get lost due to the passing the file around and computer errors..so i'm going to wait 3 weeks before i go to get my SSN just in case.

on another note a girl asked to see davids passport and started questioning him for some odd reason, he was like i'm here with my fiance activating her k1, and she drills him about his parents, where they were born, middle names, where his passport was mailed to etc etc..we were like what the heck?? no clue why they did that to him..never had an issue before and HE is the American..go figure lol

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
