Consulate Review: Senegal
Review Topic: IR-1/CR-1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : December 1, 2008
Embassy Review : I applied for a permanent resident visa for my Central African spouse at the US Consulate in Dakar a few months back. The experience was generally very positive. I presented all the documents stated on the checklists that I found on the internet and was not told to bring other. The consular officer and the local staff we dealt with were respectful and pleasant. (I will allow that some of the interrogations that we overheard of cases that were more than dubious were handled in another manner.) The entire process, very much opposite to my expectations, from the date of the first appointment to deposit her initial petition to the very much appreciated congratulations your visa is granted was approximately two months. Six of those weeks were spent putting together the various documents required for the second interview such as the police files.

There was a negative side and a number of elements could be improved. The toilets were disgusting and became increasingly so as the morning progressed. There was also no lock on the door. The processing time was extremely long. We arrived at about 0730 on both occasions and left close to noon. At least the process is transparent and we were given a reply the same day. The local security agents employed in the waiting area are arrogant, but I suppose that this is to be expected from the Senegalese.
Rating : Good
