Consulate Review: Amsterdam, Netherlands
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : December 17, 2007
Embassy Review : My fiance was over from the States and came with me to the Consulate. It was FREEZING cold and we were there early, so we rang the bell but they refused to let us in before the appointed time... We were first in line which was nice. When we went in we had our bags checked, took the batteries out the cellphone, all the security checks etc., then had to go to window 5 inside. The guy took all the I-134-related paperwork plus my passport and the bank statement showing I'd paid the €80 (they need the original and told me I'd get it back). Then we were told to wait again, and they said it could take a really long time as there was only one CO on duty. We sat down but after about 5 minutes were already called again (it helps being first!) to window 6. The CO grinned at me and said hello, then pointed to my fiance and said, "so this is the handsome guy you want to marry?" and I said "YES!!" and my fiance gave me a big kiss! It was a great start to what was a very pleasant interview. The CO made more jokes when he took my fingerprints. We had to show past marriage/divorce certificates but he didn't seem very interested in seeing any other documentation. He asked where we met and we said online, and he said how much more common that was becoming these days. He also asked my fiance where he worked and seemed very sympathetic when my fiance said he couldn't work right now because of health reasons... (we had a co-sponsor for the I-134). I signed the necessary form and that was pretty much it! Overall, a quick, easy and friendly experience. You need to take quite a bit of paperwork and the setup at the Consulate isn't exactly ideal as you have to stand at these booths and fiddle around with all the papers, so just make sure you have everything to hand that you need. Plus, if you need to use the toilet it's a big hassle as you have to wait outside for another security officer to let you through the gate. But those are the only downsides!!
Rating : Very Good

POE Review: Houston
Event Description
Entry Date : 2008-03-25
Embassy Review : After waiting for 30 minutes in the first line I was then escorted to the secondary waiting room. There were probably 15 people in there. After 30 minutes one of the immigration officers picked up my file, looked at the envelope and I-94, then put it back in the folder and handled somebody else's application! I wasn't very impressed. After waiting another 35 minutes, finally someone did take my file, open the secret envelope that I'd been carrying around, and then called me over. The first couple of questions were fine, but then I was tricked! They asked "what does your husband do for a living". I was really tired after an 11-hour flight and now a 90-minute wait, so I told them what my SO does. Then they said "well you're coming here on a K1 so you shouldn't be married... is he really your husband?" Oops... Thankfully they were ok with it and I assured them that the wedding is several weeks away, so they filled in the 90-day date for my I-94 and said I could go.

Overall, it was ok I guess. The waiting room is stuffy (if there are lots of people like when I was there) and there's nowhere to get a drink, so make sure you're not thirsty before you go in there! Plus, make sure you don't fall for any trick questions!
Harassment Level : Low

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
