Consulate Review: Mumbai, India
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : April 4, 2008
Embassy Review : I had my interview scheduled for 7:30 this morning. So I duly reported to the VFS at 7:00, as instructed and 15 minutes later was taken by their shuttle to the consulate. At the consulate we had to go through security for which we had to empty are pockets, remove our belts and walk through the metal detector. Once through security they handed all my documents back to me in a big heap (they go through them to make sure that there isn't anything subversive like a stapler or glue stick hidden in their midst), on top of which were precariously balanced all the contents of my pockets, and my belt. I was then asked to waddle over (you have to waddle because at this point your pants are threatening to slide down to your ankles since your belt is lying uselessly on top of all your documents and pocket change) to the line for fingerprinting. While standing in that line, and with all my documents cradled in my arms, I had to stuff all the stuff that was originally in my pockets back in there and put my belt back on, all the while trying not to drop all the documents which would have scattered over the entire waiting area. This is quite a feat to accomplish, and because of it you barely notice how quickly the time you spend in that line flies by! Before long my fingerprints were scanned and I was made to wait at the back of the waiting hall with a muted TV showing Cartoon Network for entertainment and screaming, jostling and kicking Gujarati children for company.

Immigrant visa applicants are called by name - versus non-immigrant visa applicants who are given token numbers - as was I shortly after. I was then asked to submit my passports (my expired one as well, because it had my permanent address in it, while the new one was renewed in Washington D.C. and has my now defunct Cleveland address in it) and affidavit of support (form I-134 and related documents which were glanced over and handed back to me).

With that accomplished, I had a marathon waiting session. In fact, 'marathon' is an incorrect word, because most international marathon races are over in about two-and-a-half or three hours. I ended up having to wait about four, while all who were ahead of me were called first.

When I was finally called to the counter - after having sat through Dragon Tales, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Tom and Jerry, Ben 10, and Dragon Ball Z - my interview took about five or ten minutes. The consulate officer was an American by accent, but Indian by ethnic origin. She first told me to raise my right and swear that **** is the woman I will be marrying and that all the information I had supplied was correct and truthful to the best of my knowledge. I swore. She then asked me to put my hand down. Next, she asked me how I first met ****. So I explained that we had met at Habitat for Humanity International in Georgia, almost eight years ago. In the process I also told her that I had been a student there for ten years, and summarised my education through undergraduate and graduate scool. She then asked what I was currently doing, so I told her that I was working, and gave her a brief description of the research project I have been working on. She was duly impressed. She also asked what **** was doing. She then asked if **** and I had any sort of ceremony, so I told her about the Rupia Peravanu which we had in February 2007. I explained it was a parsee ceremony and showed her the pictures. So then she said, "Oh, you're a Parsee!" followed by "Ok, your visa has been approved. We will courier it to you in 2-3 days." I asked if I could pick it up that evening from the VFS. They said I could try but they don't guarantee to keep it ready.

Later in the evening I went back to the VFS during the 5:30-6:30 p.m. time slot when you can pick up your passport/ visa. There was a long line of people waiting to get in. I asked the security fellow if that was the line for picking up passports. He said it was. Then he asked me if I had applied for an immigraiton visa. I said I had. So he told me to show him the courier receipt. I did. He then made me turn off my cell phone and let me in. It turns out that the waiting is only for non-immigrant visas. The waiting area was also completely packed with people waiting to pick up their non-immigrant visas. I was probably the only immigrant visa picker-upper there. I breezed in, and told the guard I was there for my immigrant visa. He took my courier receipt to the counter and made me sit for 5 minutes, during which time they presumable went to fetch my passport. I was then called to the counter and asked to sign a receipt acknolwedging that I had picked up my passport, and then I was handed a sealed package consisting of my passport and another sealed envelope containing the medical report I am supposed to hand to the immigration officer in the U.S. I then breezed out, caught a taxi and came home.
Rating : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
