Consulate Review: Mumbai, India
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : November 11, 2018
Embassy Review : Hello,
I am the beneficiary here. I had my K1 Visa Interview on November 9th, 2018 in Mumbai.
Me and my Fiancé (petitioner) reached the Embassy at 6:40 AM. Had to wait for about 7 minutes.

We were the first in the Immigration line. You enter the Embassy, go through security check and then go and stand in line for a token wherein your documents are checked and set in order like stamped DS-160 form from OFC/Biometrics appointment, PCC and birth certificate and copy.

After getting the token - first you go to an Indian officer who checks your documents like i134 form, supporting docs etc + checks your biometrics taken earlier (In my case - the Biometrics that I had given somehow didn’t get registered in their system so they had to do it again, some glitch at their end I guess and since I had the proof they couldn’t say it was my fault.)

After the first round you sit again and wait for the American Consular Officer to
take your final interview. They start taking Interviews after 8 AM and both the officers have your original i129f package and use it for reference.

My turn came around 8.25 AM approximately and my petitioner went to the counter with me. He was asked to sit. Then the officer pledged me and started the extreme rapid fire of questions. The officer grilled me quite hard for 10 minutes and after he was satisfied he relaxed a bit and talked around. While asking me questions he sometimes typed and later said the magic words - “You are approved” and explained regarding my rights in the US and domestic violence blah blah....

Questions asked:
1. Who is calling you to US
2. Tell me about the proposal
3. Where does your fiancé live and work
4. Love/Arrange Marriage and how did you meet
5. First time talked and met in person
6. Any ceremony done in India - pheras/ring/ walked around the fire etc.
7. Wedding Plans in US
8. Intended date of travel for US in detail even after I told him we cannot set a date till I have my visa.

The Consular officer really really grilled me hard regarding doing any ceremony in India, he asked me 10 times regarding this issue in many different ways.
He tried to twist my answers and interpret them in different ways and I had to correct him at least 5 times that what you understood was wrong. He asked me questions so so so fast that I didn’t even have a second to think about the answers (basically all you can say is the truth can’t make up answers.)

I had proofs and answers for everything almost every scenario, thus I was very very well prepared and didn’t have to think about answers as I had already prepared very well in advance. In front of the American Consular I had kept two huge and thick folders of papers with evidences and a fat photo album with pictures.

But, all in all I got approved and he was satisfied in the end.

Tips for everyone:
1.Go very very very well prepared with all documents and answers.
2.Think of questions that can be asked and prepare answers - that really helps a lot.
3.Do not volunteer information, just answer to what you are asked. If it’s a yes/no question then answer in yes or no only. Don’t provide explanations.
4.Carry photos in a nice photo album (that gives a personal touch)
5.Act confident and be very firm with your answers, stand ground and correct the officer if he is trying to twist you around.

Hope this review helps and if anyone wants to ask anymore questions you can always message me.

P.S. For your interview definitely plan to stay at The Trident Hotel next to the Embassy. Although expensive it provides a lot of comfort and is very very convenient since you cannot take your mobile phones or purses.
Also, take a walk around the Embassy the evening before that will provide you comfort knowing the place.

Thank you and all the very best to everyone!!!!

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
