Embassy Review : After looking at the directions that had been given in Packet IV, we (My mum, sister, and I) made our way round to the Embassy. Mum kept wanting to ask people directions, but she ended up persevering with our course which led straight to it. We walked round the diversion signs (they are doing some works outside the embassy itself) and through Grosvenor Park. We could see there was already a queue for the earlier interviews as it was 9am already.

Taking the time to sit in the park for 10 minutes was something that we all appreciated. We talked about what happens if things go well, what happens if they don't, and a myriad of other topics were brushed on.

Decided to take my chance and join the queue at about 9:10. There I was, two great big folders under my arm, my passport and letter in the other hand. Waved them off and with my stomach churning headed to the first person in a bright yellow jacket. They checked my name off a list and asked me to join the third queue.

A woman came round instructing us to remove everything from our pockets, belts, necklaces, and watches and put them in little clear plastic bags. We all complied, only occasionally grumbling about the need to hold our trousers up ^_^.

Soon enough I saw the second person in the yellow jacket who was at the front of the queue - he took my name, looked at my passport and the letter and directed me to the very short line that was waiting to go through security. They had a fairly slick operation going on there - just like in an airport. The plastic bags and anything you carry goes through an X-Ray machine, and you go through a metal detector. They then take any electronic devices from you and give you a yellow tag with a number on it, and then give you the rest of your belongings back. You head out the back of the hut and then walk all the way round the embassy to the "Visa" entrance. It was about 10:15 by this point.

Walking through the door, I was greeted by a receptionist who asked to see my letter. She pressed a box on the touch-screen computer and I received a numbered ticket - Number 12. I was then directed up the stairs.

Upon entering the doors at the top of the stairs I head "Ticket Number 12 to Window 1 please". Wow, hadn't even had time to even glance around me, but I found it quickly enough.

The window itself didn't have anyone behind it for about 10 minutes. Eventually a lovely-natured oriental woman came in and asked to see my letter and my passport. We joked about the amount of paperwork I had. She asked to see certain documents which I provided to her, and she then asked to see the affidavits of support. After she rifled through them and took out the sheets she needed, she asked to scan my finger and thumb prints - grinning that I would have to squish my fingers together as I had such big hands. She then gave me a yellow slip to take round to Window 12 to go and pay the $100 visa fee. After thanking her I headed round to window 12....

The woman in window 12 asked how I was going to pay. I stated that I was going to pay by debit card and she quickly told me that the Credit Card processing system was down and that they could only accept cash. I grimaced a little, knowing that I didn't have enough on me to cover the visa fee and the courier fee - and that the letter stated that the couriers only accept cash. She told me not to worry, to go and take the slip back to window 1, let her know the situation, and I could go to the nearest cash point.

Gingerly I returned to Window 1. She was very nice about it - wrote on my letter to ask security to not make me wait in the queues, and even came to the stairs to show me the nearest cash point that was off-premises. As I turned to leave she said there was no need to rush

After heading out and using the Church of ATM, I headed back to the main security lines. They saw the letter and guided me to the front. Went through the security scans once more and headed back up to the visa office. Made my payment at Window 12 and took the payment slip to Window 1. She asked me a few questions about what Christi did for a living, what I did for a living, when she was next coming over and then directed me to sit down and wait for my number to be called.

I must have waited about half an hour for my number to be called. I didn't dare go to the loo because I was worried that I would miss the calling

Walked up to the window and the nice American gentleman greeted me. He asked how I was doing and I told him the truth:
Me: "I'm petrified"
AG: "Ahh, no need to worry - this is the easy bit. I've just had to interview someone with 7 convictions on his police record... you don't have that do you?"
Me: "No, clean as a whistle - although I do have 3 points on my drivers license "
AG: "Oh well let's arrest you right now then - I mean, that's _such_ a heinous offence :grin".

He plonked my file on to the desk in front of him. "You two certainly know how to put a file together, don't you?!". I pointed to my copy of it, and the extra evidence - "Yes, Christi is very efficient - I need someone to keep me organised ". He looked at it and said "I don't think that would even fit through the window slot here - good job we won't need it." He eyed up the front of the bottom folder - I held it up to the window (it has an article on it entitled "How to be a good groom"). He chuckled to himself - "She giving you some hints, huh? Henpecked already?".

He asked me to raise my right hand and affirm that what I was about to tell him was the truth and then proceded to asked a few questions about how we met, how the relationship developed, whether we'd met each others families.

He asked what I did here, and when I told him he said "Ahh, no need for extra financial support documentation then - you'll have no problem finding work in the South".

He then took my index fingerprints and looked me straight in the eye and said: "Well, unless anything comes back from the FBI check I am very pleased to tell you that you should receive your visa by next weekend - welcome to America!"

I nearly wept - I thanked him gathered up my things and headed to the bathroom.

Post-bathroom I headed to the couriers desk where they said that it should be with me in 3 to 5 working days providing processing goes well. They asked how I wanted to pay, whether I wanted to upgrade the delivery service at all, and asked me to verify the details on the printout.

I headed out of the building, went back to security to get my phone, called Christi to call me back, called my mum and sister to get them to meet me in the park, and told them all the _very_ good news. I tried to hold it back a bit to tease them, but I couldn't do it - there was too much elation in my voice

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
