Consulate Review: London, United Kingdom
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : May 8, 2017
Embassy Review : I arrived at the embassy approximately an hour early and headed straight for the little visa pavilion outside but was politely asked if I could come back 15 minutes before my appointment time. Oxford Street is only a few minutes walk away so I wandered around some of the shops for a little while before returning to the embassy. The man I had spoken to earlier had since been replaced by a very pleasant lady who asked to see my passport and appointment letter (I'd printed off the email confirmation). After she crossed my name off her list, she directed me towards the security booth nearby.

The door of the security booth was locked so I pressed the button to presumably buzz the people inside, after which a lady eventually opened the door for me and asked to see my passport and appointment letter again. I then placed my bag, phone and belt onto the conveyor belt to be scanned but was allowed to keep my hoodie and shoes on. They also let me bring in the bottle of water I had in my bag. After walking through the metal detector, I collected my belongings and awkwardly waited to see if the security people needed me to do anything else. After completely ignoring me for a minute or so, the lady who'd opened the door for me earlier told me to head through the door behind me and to the right. After exiting the security booth, I walked around the side of the embassy and up some steps to a set of doors.

Inside, there was a reception desk where I again gave my name and was handed a sticker with my ticket number on it. I was then directed to the left where I entered the waiting area, which consisted of a huge number of chairs in a long room. At the front of the room, there was a large set of screens displaying window numbers for tickets that had been called and some other general information. Most of the general information portion of the screens wasn't working correctly though so it was pretty useless, I only caught some glimpses of what looked like information on what documents you need to have on hand etc.

I'd only just sat down in the waiting area before the screen made an odd windows error noise to tell me my ticket number had been called to one of the windows nearby. I approached the window and was asked by a very nice man to hand over the following documents one by one:

- Passport
- Birth Certificate
- Police Certificate
- Affidavit of Support (with evidence)

He also asked me a few basic questions like whether I had a criminal record or had ever lived outside the UK, after which he told me that I could sit down again to wait for the 'interview' itself.

Unfortunately, this is where my experience took somewhat of a turn for the worse. Despite the fact that there seemed to be very few people in the waiting room, I had to wait more than two hours to be called up again. All of the ticket numbers before me kept getting called to the same window so I'm assuming they only had one in operation. When my number did eventually get called, I headed down a small passageway to a second set of windows where I was met by an american man who appeared to be new as he had a lady standing behind him helping. He already had all of my documentation and proceeded to ask me some questions about my relationship:

- When did you meet?
- Where did you meet?
- When did you first meet in person?
- Did you go to her or did she come to you?
- How many times have you visited her?
- What does she do for a living?
- What do you like about Arkansas?
- How do you feel about the age difference? (I'm 27, she's 33)

I don't feel that I answered some of the questions particularly well (I was nervous) but he eventually handed back all of my documents (other than my passport) and told me I was approved. He then said that I should expect my passport back, containing the visa, within 10 days or so. After that, I exited the building and messaged my fiancée to let her know how it had gone.

Overall, it was a fairly positive experience other than the ridiculously long wait. If I could give them a rating based purely on the politeness and professionalism of the staff, I'd probably give them five stars.
Rating : Moderate

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
