This is the consulate review in Ho Chi Minh City that I attended on Jan. 3, 2017.
6:55am: Arrived at Consulate with already a long line that formed outside the gate. After we arrived, more people came and stood in line. I'd say we were in the middle of the line.
7:30am: Gate started to open and they let everyone in, with greeters checking bags and scanning body with wand. Just an FYI, greeters were very rude and very grouchy, so be prepared to take some abuse.
Once in, they will line you up according to your place in line...there were 5 lines and no sitting down. Don't worry about the Immigrant visa, non-immigrant visa sign, they mean nothing. Greeter will give you a blank piece of paper to fill out, so make sure you bring a pen or two as other people will probably ask to borrow your pen. You will need to fill out the applicant's name, today's date and date of birth. In the back, it will be your passport information, issue date and expiration date of passport. NOTE: If you make a mistake, the greeter will not give you another piece of paper!!! They are adamant about it. Also, it is kind of hard to fill it out since you are standing up so try to bring something flat you can write on.
Once filled out and the line starts moving, you will enter a building where you will drop your phones and any electronic equipment and your bags will go through a machine scanner.
After that, you will enter another building where you will stand in line for biometrics scan. The greeter will ask for your appointment letter to make sure you belong here. Petitioners that come along will be asked to sit at benches on the right. My fiancee had her daughter with her but as she approached the biometrics counter, a greeter told her that her daughter didn't need biometrics so her daughter sat down next to me on the bench.
Once biometrics were done, she was given a number. We waited for her number to be called. It was a while. Once called, her and I walked up to the window that her number was called to and started giving the required docs in packet 3 to the guy at a window. I had provided an orange cover letter for each packet such as I-134 support form, divorce decrees for me and her, Justice Record #2 etc... Originals and copies for all provided documents. At the window, the guy looked at some docs and handed us back what he didn't need. He had an orange paper check list of all the docs provided. He checked off all boxes so we weren't missing anything, which was great and noted something really short on the paper, but I couldn't read it. Also, he had our I-129F packet in front of him. He did ask her a few times if she was with the government as she has travelled a lot in the past year...twice in Thailand and twice to Singapore. I guess maybe government employees are not allowed to apply for a visa?? or they travelled a lot??? Not sure. After all done, he asked us to sit back down and wait for our number to be called again...same number that was given to us at the biometric line. FYI, he didn't ask us for any proof of relationship evidence there.
After waiting some more, our number was called for the interview. It seemed that interviews were done at window numbers 10-20. There was a window where 3 CO were gathered and discussed cases beforehand before calling numbers. It seemed that they were making decisions based on the information from the I-129F and the docs provided...and then when they were ready to call the interviewees, they called the number. That window seemed to have a lot of blue slips handed out to each applicants and asked a lot of questions. We were called to a window where just one female Co and one translator was present.
We came up and she asked us to raise our right hand to swear at an oath. The translator asked me in vietnamese if I knew Vietnamese and I answered her yes in vietnamese. Then the CO asked me to go ahead and sit down and she would call me if she had any questions for me. I said ok, no problem and sat back down.
Her interview lasted less than 5 min, but it seemed longer...
She was asked:
1) When and how we met. Dec. 2015, through online dating site Vietnamcupid
2) How many times have we met (how many trips did I make basically) Twice and this is the 3rd time now at the interview.
3) When did I separate from my previous wife and when was the divorce final
4) How old was my daughter and who she lived with (17 and she lives with her mom)
5) Did she have any relatives in the US? (she said just an uncle)
6) Did we travel together and if yes, where? Thailand after our engagement party.
She answered all questions in Vietnamese.
Seems the questions were asked mainly from our I-129F application and the timeline that we submitted.
After that, the CO asked if she had any pictures and if yes, could she look at them. We had made copies of pictures on a colored piece of paper...2 pictures per piece of paper with a description, date, time and location underneath them. After looking at them, the CO said, Congratulations and welcome to the US and the translator explained the process of when and how to receive our passports and that there will be an envelope where she is to not open.
We were so glad.
After that, we went to a desk where we filled out an EMS form where the passports would be sent. They wanted 2 phone numbers.
All in all, we were out of the consulate at 10:45am.
Hope this helps anyone that is having an interview at the consulate. Let me know if you have any questions.
I would suggest eating something before heading to the consulate in the morning as you'll be very hungry and it is very warm inside.
